Lisa Kudrow Reveals the Lonely Truth Behind Playing Phoebe on Friends
Fans may now hail Phoebe Buffay as Friends’ breakout MVP, but Lisa Kudrow says that during the show’s original run she was the castmate nobody cared about — a perception that only flipped years later.
Let’s be honest—if you logged any time watching 'Friends', you probably know at least one person who swears Phoebe Buffay was the MVP of the group. Today, Lisa Kudrow’s quirky, guitar-wielding character is all over the internet and meme pages, and plenty of fans rank her as the secret weapon of the show. But here’s the wild part: back when 'Friends' was actually on the air, most people (including the industry) saw Phoebe—and Kudrow herself—as basically an afterthought.
Lisa Kudrow: 'The Sixth Friend'?
Kudrow just opened up about this in a recent interview (with The Independent, if you’re curious). Talking about her time on the show, she admitted bluntly:
'Nobody cared about me. There were certain parts of [my talent agency] that just referred to me as "the sixth Friend." There was no vision for me, and no expectations about the kind of career I could have. There was just, like, "Boy, is she lucky she got on that show."'
Can you imagine? Today, the character’s everywhere, but back then she was mainly seen as the weird sidekick—if people noticed her at all.
Winning, Despite Low Expectations
No one expected much out of Kudrow—or Phoebe—at the time. She wasn’t getting the scripts that kicked off A-list movie careers, and there weren’t exactly offers pouring in for her to headline a romantic comedy. In Kudrow’s own words, the agents only started taking notice after she landed a major role in 'Analyze This' (alongside Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal). Suddenly, everybody had ideas about her career... but, as she put it, she already knew that "wasn’t gonna work. I’m just not adorable."
Why That 'Sixth Wheel' Status Actually Helped
Here’s the twist: being overlooked opened up some doors for her that might have stayed locked if she’d been the main marketing focus. Since no one pegged her as 'the next big thing,' Kudrow got the freedom to do movies like 'Clockwatchers', 'Mother', and, of course, 'Analyze This.' So, the industry sort of forgot about her... which worked out, weirdly enough.
'Friends' Legacy (and Phoebe’s Place in It)
- Kudrow won an Emmy for Phoebe Buffay, even if the character was underrated at the time
- In the years since, fans have put Phoebe in the running for best sitcom character ever—go figure
- 'Friends' is still everywhere, and so is Phoebe (even if her own agents had no clue back then)
So, if you ever feel like the odd one out in the group, just remember: sometimes being 'the sixth Friend' is exactly what lets you become the unexpected favorite years later.
