Kristen Stewart Teases Directorial Take on Twilight Saga
Kristen Stewart has hinted at the idea of directing a new version of the Twilight films, sparking excitement among fans eager to see her vision for the iconic vampire series.
Devotees of the Twilight universe have been given fresh cause for speculation, as Kristen Stewart has floated the notion of returning to the franchise—this time, not in front of the camera, but behind it. During a recent interview, Stewart remarked,
I would love to readapt – yeah, sure, I’ll do the remake. I'm doing it, I'm committed,
sending ripples of excitement through the fanbase. While her tone suggested a hint of mischief, the prospect of Stewart helming a new adaptation has certainly set imaginations racing.
The conversation unfolded on the red carpet at the Palm Springs International Film Festival, where Stewart was recognised among the top emerging directors following her debut with The Chronology of Water. When prompted about which of her earlier works she might consider revisiting as a director, she admitted that the original Twilight film had been on her mind, having caught it on television over the festive period.
Reflecting on the Original Films
Stewart expressed a certain fondness for the unique qualities each director brought to the series, noting,
I love what all of the directors did with the movies, but they were so themselves and weird and kind of like squirrely and just so present in that time when they didn't really know what they were yet, like before they blew up.
She mused on the idea of approaching the material with a substantial budget and a supportive environment, hinting at the creative possibilities such circumstances might offer.
The Twilight films, adapted from Stephenie Meyer's bestselling novels, first appeared on screens in 2008. Stewart portrayed Bella Swan, a teenager who relocates to a perpetually damp corner of Washington state and finds herself entangled with Edward Cullen, a vampire living with his equally immortal family. Over five instalments, the series chronicled Bella and Edward's relationship, culminating in Bella's own transformation into a vampire.
Directorial Lineage and Franchise Revival
Should Stewart decide to take the director's seat, she would not be treading on any one individual's toes, as each film in the original run was helmed by a different director. Catherine Hardwicke launched the saga, followed by Chris Weitz, David Slade, and Bill Condon, who oversaw the final two chapters.
The appetite for all things Twilight remains undiminished. The films are set for a theatrical re-release in 2025, and a new animated adaptation of Meyer's Midnight Sun is in the works for Netflix. Midnight Sun, published in 2025, offers a fresh perspective on the original story, this time through Edward's eyes.
With Stewart's directorial ambitions now public, fans are left to wonder whether her playful suggestion might one day become a reality, bringing a new dimension to a saga that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.
