Kit Harington has spoken out about the campaign to remake Game of Thrones’ final series, sharing his candid reaction to the online uproar.

Kit Harington, best known for his portrayal of Jon Snow, has not minced words when reflecting on the uproar that followed the last series of Game of Thrones. The actor, who appeared in all eight instalments of the HBO fantasy epic, recently shared his unfiltered thoughts on the campaign demanding a do-over of the much-debated conclusion.

“That genuinely angered me,”

he admitted in a conversation with The New York Times.

“Like, how dare you? Sorry, that's just how I feel. I think it was a level of idiocy that can only come about through social media.”

The backlash was nothing short of extraordinary. Nearly two million signatures appeared on a petition hosted by change.com, urging HBO to produce a final series that, in the words of its creator,

“makes sense.”

The petition’s author, known as Dylan D., didn’t hold back, writing,

“[Showrunners] David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have proven themselves to be woefully incompetent writers when they have no source material.”

The eighth series quickly became a byword for let-down endings, a comparison that has resurfaced whenever a much-loved show stumbles at the last hurdle—Stranger Things’ fifth series being a recent example.

Controversy and Lasting Impact

From scenes so dimly lit that viewers squinted at their screens, to the infamous Starbucks cup blunder, and a pace that left some feeling short-changed after years of build-up, the final run of episodes has become infamous for all the wrong reasons. The fallout was so intense that Harington, by his own account, instructed his agent to avoid any future roles involving swords. Ironically, his Marvel character, Dane Whitman, was teased as the Black Knight in a post-credits scene for Eternals, suggesting the sword might not be gone for good.

Meanwhile, the literary saga that inspired the series remains unfinished. Readers are still waiting for George R.R. Martin to complete A Song of Ice and Fire, with The Winds of Winter still in progress. Martin himself described the writing process as

“the curse of my life”

in an interview from April 2025, a sentiment that will resonate with fans who have been waiting for closure for over a decade.

Spin-Offs and What’s Next

Despite the divisive ending, the world of Westeros continues to expand. Spin-offs have kept audiences returning, with A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set to debut on 18 January, and the third series of House of the Dragon expected to arrive this summer. The appetite for tales from this universe shows little sign of waning, even as debates about the original’s conclusion rumble on.

For those keeping an eye on what’s coming up in the world of television, there’s plenty to look forward to. Whether it’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Wonder Man, Lanterns, Spider-Man: Noir, or VisionQuest, the next year promises a fresh batch of much-anticipated series. Which one tops your list?
