Netflix is dusting off a 1990s spec, and Jaume Collet-Serra’s Maelstrom has swapped Alan Ritchson for an action icon.

Here’s a bit of a plot twist straight from the casting department: Keanu Reeves is stepping in as the lead for Maelstrom, Jaume Collet-Serra’s next action flick for Netflix. Originally, it was meant to be Alan Ritchson’s show, but he’s quietly exited the project – and no one’s saying exactly why.

Keanu Reeves will now take over from Alan Ritchson as the star of Maelstrom, with the news first surfacing from Page Six Hollywood. The reasons for Ritchson’s departure remain under wraps.

The Premise

If you’re getting déjà vu vibes, you’re not alone – Maelstrom is pitched as ‘Die Hard in a hurricane’. That’s exactly how the script was first punted around Hollywood, and, well, it’s not subtle. The plot? A Federal Marshal is stuck protecting the fiancée of an arms dealer, who’s about to turn on her soon-to-be ex and head into witness protection. Everything kicks off during one storm-soaked evening, complete with a hurricane shutting down communications and reinforcements. While the weather’s battering the place from the outside, the pair are fending off an army of goons loyal to the arms bloke inside – so, just a quiet night in, really.

How Did We Get Here?

The story behind Maelstrom is nearly as dramatic as anything on screen. The script has been floating about since the nineties, with Jeff Robinov (once an agent, later running things at Warner Bros.) grabbing it for the studio back in 1993. Warner Bros. actually bought it for a sum that, by today’s standards, lands somewhere between half a million and almost $1.5 million. Turns out, ‘Die Hard in a hurricane’ sounded pretty good after Speed, apparently. Fast forward 33 years, and it’s Netflix resurfacing the project after a lengthy stay in development limbo.

Maelstrom was originally snapped up by Warner Bros. in 1993 for a price that would be north of a million dollars today, but it never got made there.

The script itself began with the late Gregory Fitzpatrick. These days, Mark Bianculli (How to Rob a Bank) is doing a fresh polish, aiming to finally haul it in front of cameras with Collet-Serra at the helm.

Where’s Ritchson Off To?

No official word on why Alan Ritchson left. If you follow his career, the bloke’s got enough on his plate – still leading the chart-busting Reacher series for Amazon, plus juggling a stack of feature projects. Next up for him: a Christmas caper called The Man with the Bag, where he’ll star alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Awkwafina as an ex-thief drafted in by Santa himself to recover a stolen magic bag. That one’s dropping on Prime Video on 2 December. The timing’s festive if nothing else.
