Bad news if you were hoping for a crossover: a major X-Men star has quashed an Avengers appearance, ruling out Doomsday or Secret Wars before their X-Men debut.

Here we go again: another week, another Marvel rumour shot down—this time by the bloke cast as Professor X in the upcoming X-Men reboot. For those hoping we'd see the new Charles Xavier brushing shoulders with Earth's Mightiest Heroes before his own big debut, you can forget it. Christopher Abbott is putting that theory to bed, and he's not exactly being subtle about it.

The Interview That Nipped It in the Bud

Abbott, who was officially unveiled as the fresh face of Professor X at D23 earlier this year, was cornered by Rolling Stone about whether he'd be popping up in Avengers: Doomsday (that one hits cinemas 18 December 2026, mark your calendars) or Secret Wars before the X-Men movie actually comes out. He could've dodged, teased, or winked. Instead, he just looked confused and then fairly blunt about the whole thing.

Abbott, in a chat with Rolling Stone, tried to make it clear: 'No, I'm not in that. I gotta do the X-Men movie first before any of that stuff.'

That doesn't leave much room for ambiguity, does it? When pressed, he even half-joked about not having a clue what was going on, but the upshot is unmistakable: he's not showing up in Doomsday. There's a tiny bit more wiggle room regarding Secret Wars (coming December 2027), but he offered zero hint of being involved in that either.

Avengers: Doomsday hits cinemas this December, but Abbott will be nowhere near it as Professor X.

Why Everyone Was Speculating

The reason this theory had legs is simple: both Doomsday and Secret Wars are sprawling event films, absolutely stuffed with crossover cameos. Their marketing has already played up the multiverse angle, even going so far as to include the old 2000s-era X-Men cast in the trailers—yes, including Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier. So naturally, people wanted to know if Marvel would try to bring out the new X-Men before their scheduled May 2028 reboot launch, just to prime the audience.

Abbott's response makes it clear Marvel's not doing that—not with him, at any rate. His menu: X-Men first, Avengers shenanigans… maybe later.

Who Else Is on the New Team?

The X-Men relaunch, set for May 2028, has already confirmed a handful of fresh faces. Alongside Abbott as Professor X, you’ll see:

  • Sadie Sink as Jean Grey
  • Inde Navarrette as Rogue
  • Maya Boyd as Storm
  • Asa Germann as Angel

With Abbott at the front, this new line-up is meant to reset Marvel's mutant universe for the next decade, but don’t expect clever cameos in the saga-ending Avengers two-parter. The old X-Men might get their curtain call in Doomsday, but for the first time in ages, the newcomers are sitting it out until their proper debut.
