Netflix is running it back: Kate Hudson’s Running Point has scored a Season 3 renewal, setting up another full-court press of on- and off-court drama.

If you like your sports comedies with a side of wild family drama and some seriously awkward office romances, Netflix clearly has your back. The streamer just gave the green light to Season 3 of Running Point—and yes, Kate Hudson will be back as the basketball boss you love, hate, or possibly want to psychoanalyze.

Let's Recap: The Premise That Kinda Feels Familiar

Starting last February, Kate Hudson took on the role of Isla Gordon, the instantly-overwhelmed new president of the totally made-up Los Angeles Waves. After a messy family scandal, Isla is forced into running her family's pro basketball team even though, if we're being honest, she's only slightly more prepared than you or I would be.

If the basic setup makes you think of the real-life saga of the Lakers front office, you're onto something. Isla is at least partially modeled on Jeanie Buss—who actually produces the show—and ascended to Lakers president in the wake of her own brother's questionable leadership run (for the non-diehards: this all really happened about a decade ago).

Season 2: Even More Of A Mess—In A Good Way

  • The new season piled on even more chaos. Isla is fighting like hell to make her team relevant and championship-worthy, all while getting blindsided by her brother Cam (played by Justin Theroux) suddenly popping back into her life, fresh from rehab.
  • And if you wanted romance? She's got a love triangle with her ex-fiancé Lev (Max Greenfield), former coach Jay (Jay Ellis), and more sexual tension than you can shake a whiteboard at.
  • Just to make Isla's life complete, there's also Ray Romano as grumpy head coach Norm Stinson—a guy who acts like every day is a Monday.

It's a soap opera in sneakers, and honestly, it's more fun than half the actual NBA season.

Netflix's Verdict: Bring On More Drama

If you're worried that Isla's story would end in mid-meltdown, fear not. Netflix has officially renewed Running Point for a third season, and this is barely a month after the second season dropped.

To put it in perspective, Season 2 didn't totally crush the numbers the way Season 1 did (5.3 million views on opening weekend for S2, versus 6.7 million for the first season), but it still managed to land in Netflix's Top 10 most-watched between April 27 and May 3, with 2.5 million streams. As of this writing, it's still hanging out in that Top 10, which is better than most of the stream-and-forget series Netflix pumps out these days.

"Running Point continues to connect with fans, thanks to plenty of off-court chaos and more cameos than an NBA All-Star bench."

And yes, there's more to come—Netflix is clearly banking on viewers just as hungry for fictional franchise dysfunction as they are for, you know, actual basketball.
