He set out to slay a monster and became one — a ruthless pivot that could win the war and cost him everything.

Alright, so if you’ve been anywhere near superhero TV in the last few years, you know Karl Urban pretty much owns the role of Billy Butcher in Prime Video’s The Boys. He’s played the world’s most charmingly angry Supe-hater for five seasons straight, dragging his poor liver and even poorer moral compass through more blood-soaked chaos than any character deserves. And, as you might expect, things for Butcher are not showing any signs of calming down as we head into Season 5—if anything, he’s getting even weirder.

From Supe Hunter to...Gross Tentacle Guy

Let’s do a quick catchup for the uninitiated: Butcher started out as the ultimate 'normal guy fights gods' figure, out for revenge after his wife vanished (and later turned up dead). Through four seasons, he’s led a group of misfits against the absolute worst powered people on TV. You’d think 'stubborn asshole with a big heart underneath' would get old, but they keep finding, let’s say, surprising ways to evolve him. Like, literally evolve him.

Last season, Butcher took the leap from ‘Superman-hunting maniac’ to ‘actual superhuman maniac’ by finally downing a full dose of Compound V, which—sorry, not sorry—turned him into something not for the squeamish. The newest party trick? Sprouting chest tentacles. Yes, tentacles. However many he has is still a mystery, but let's just hope he keeps his shirt on at dinner parties.

He’s come a long way since first taking Temp V in Season 3 (that temporary stuff that gave him laser eyes, super strength, and, unfortunately, a ticking time bomb on his lifespan). Now, in Season 4, he’s physically changed for good and morally hanging by a thread, which is right where Karl Urban seems to love playing him.

Billy Butcher’s Last Stand

So what’s new for Butcher in Season 5? We’ve got some actual insight straight from Urban himself, who’s clearly having a ball pushing this character off the deep end. Here’s a key quote that pretty much sums up the vibe he’s bringing:

'Butcher is essentially so desperate that he’s turned himself into the monster in order to defeat the monster. That opened up a whole new, fresh territory for me to play as an actor… [When] he flicks that switch, it’s very cold, very Terminator-like, and then the other side of that coin was really trying to discover or hold onto what shreds of humanity he had left. So that was a real joy in Season 5 to get new fresh territory to mine.'

Translation: Butcher’s cracking up, and Urban’s loving every second. Watching him try to stay human—while becoming kind of a walking bio-weapon—sounds like the best kind of bizarre challenge. And if you thought regular old Butcher was dangerous, wait until you see him cut loose with superpowers and even less of a filter.

Setting Up for an All-Out Bloodbath

Urban has described this new version of his character as 'a guided missile'—which, coming from the guy who used to headbutt people for fun, is saying something. He’s calling Butcher the gnarliest, most powerful version you’ll see. So if you’re following along at home: Butcher is now both the bomb and the fuse, and absolutely no one is safe, not even his friends.

The big showdown with Homelander is still looming. Nobody’s said how that’s going to shake out, but if the past four seasons are any clue, expect fireworks—and probably a record-setting amount of blood. Every sign points to Season 5 being the wildest run yet. Frankly, if it doesn’t leave you feeling a little unsettled, it probably hasn’t done its job.

Quick Recap: Butcher’s Powers (So Far)

  • Temp V (Season 3): Temporary powers – super strength, durability, laser vision, side order of existential dread.
  • Compound V (Season 4): Permanent powers, plus chest tentacles (yes, really). His humanity? That’s the part that’s temporary now.

If you want to keep tabs on just how far Butcher can fall—and how many body parts can come out of his chest—Season 5 of The Boys lands on Prime Video April 8, 2026. There’s really nothing else quite like it on TV—or anywhere else, for that matter.
