Jude Law admits his biggest regret about playing young Dumbledore in Fantastic Beasts — and he spelled it out to The Movie Dweeb at Comic Con Liverpool.

Bit of a shame, this one. Jude Law, who stepped into the younger shoes of Albus Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts series, has been opening up about the role, and it turns out he’s got a proper lingering regret about the whole thing. If you were hoping to see Law’s Dumbledore go full beard-and-robes before the credits rolled on the spin-off films—well, he was right there with you. Unfortunately, as he admitted at Comic Con Liverpool, the full Dumbledore arc he had in mind never quite made it onto the screen.

At Comic Con Liverpool, Jude Law explained: "Sometimes the decisions in the life of a film or of a franchise are made up after you finish, you know, and that kind of felt what happened with the Fantastic Beasts franchise and, you know, different times ask for different, you know… I did hope to do, yeah, to fulfill that circle, to get to the point where you see Dumbledore finally face Grindelwald, but it never happened."

The Arc That Wasn’t

So, what exactly did Law want from his time as Dumbledore? Two things, mainly: a proper on-screen showdown between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, and a physical transformation to match the character’s journey from maverick professor to wise old Hogwarts headmaster. If you remember, Law’s Dumbledore in the Fantastic Beasts films was all smart suits and sharp style, a far cry from the wizard’s later look—flowing grey hair, beard, and those unmistakable robes. Law reckoned we should have seen that change happen on screen.

At the same event, Law said: "I always hoped that on that journey you would see him lose his three-piece suits and put on a robe. …that’s where he picks up all the, like, he suddenly stops wearing suits and just comes in in, like, all these robes, starts growing his beard out. I thought, oh, that’s why he dresses like that."

Essentially, Law pictured a moment where Dumbledore would take a sabbatical—retreating from his usual routine, only to re-emerge looking more like the wizard everyone remembers from the original films. It’s a fair take, actually. We all know how Dumbledore ends up, but seeing the 'how' would have been something. Instead, studio decisions and shifting franchise priorities meant the series never reached the big duel or the full visual transformation. If you’re keeping score, Law first put on the suit (not the robes) back in 2018's Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and returned in 2022 for Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore—but that’s as far as it went.

  • Jude Law played young Albus Dumbledore in two Fantastic Beasts films: 2018 and 2022.
  • He wanted to portray Dumbledore’s transformation into his iconic wizard look—robes, beard and all.
  • The films ended before showing Dumbledore’s ultimate battle with Grindelwald.
