Jon Hamm Finally Reveals If He’d Return for a Mad Men Reboot
Jon Hamm shuts the door on a Mad Men reboot, saying he has aged out of Don Draper and that the series already ended exactly as it should.
If you’ve been holding out hope that Don Draper might pop back up in some Mad Men reboot—well, Jon Hamm would like you to let that idea go. The man’s moved on, and he’s pretty blunt about it.
Jon Hamm: 'I've aged out of playing Don'
In a recent chat with Extra TV, Hamm got straight to the point when asked about any talk of him bringing Don Draper back for another round. Here’s the money quote:
'Oh god. I don’t know. If they do it, it certainly won’t be with me. I think I’ve aged out of playing Don.'
No hedging. No maybes. Hamm’s 55 now, and he doesn’t see himself trying to squeeze back into Draper’s sharp suits. Not only is the age thing a factor, but he also just seems genuinely uninterested in dragging the show’s neat wrap-up back into the spotlight.
A Finale That Actually Felt Like a Finale
As far as Hamm’s concerned, Mad Men ended almost perfectly. He pointed out that the series gave real closure to its main characters—Peggy, Pete, Betty, Roger, and of course Don himself. Here’s how he put it in that same interview:
'I was very pleased with how the show ended… I’d hate to open that box back up and ruin it.'
Basically, Hamm doesn’t want that classic 'unnecessary reboot' curse to strike Mad Men. Messing with a good thing just doesn’t appeal to him. And this isn’t a sudden change of heart—he told The Hollywood Reporter a while back that, “There’s no story to tell. We ran out of story.” In his view, everyone already got their curtain call, and it worked.
Rewatching the Glory Days (With a Twist)
Hamm might not want to go back and play Don Draper again, but that doesn’t mean he’s fully left Mad Men in the past. He’s actually been revisiting the series at home with his wife, Anna Osceola. According to him, watching it now—almost twenty years after the original premiere—is like crack opening a time capsule. He called the experience 'very wild' and, maybe most importantly, admitted this about the show:
'It’s a pretty good show… it’s been really fun' revisiting it.
Can’t say he’s wrong.
Don Draper’s Story: Actually Finished
- Jon Hamm says he's too old for the Don Draper gig now and has no plans to return
- He thinks the series ended in exactly the right place, with every important character getting closure
- He's not interested in revisiting the story or risking its legacy with a reboot
- He’s recently been watching Mad Men with his wife and thinks it holds up surprisingly well
- Other cast might feel differently, but Hamm’s made up his mind: Draper’s done
If you’re waiting for Mad Men: The Next Generation with Hamm front and center, you can stop holding your breath. The guy is happily watching from the couch these days, not counting down to his next casting call as Don. Kind of refreshing, honestly.
