Rave reviews aren’t the only thing scorching The Punisher: One Last Kill — Jon Bernthal went all-in, setting himself on fire and pulling off the blaze stunt without a double, director Reinaldo Marcus Green reveals.

So, in case you were worried that Hollywood was getting soft about practical stunts, here comes Jon Bernthal—in typical Punisher fashion—to remind everyone what 'dedication' actually looks like. For the new Disney+ special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, Bernthal decided the only way to do Frank Castle justice was to set himself on actual fire. Not with CGI, not with camera tricks, but with the real, burny stuff.

When the Lead Actually Lights Himself Up

Director Reinaldo Marcus Green (you might know him from King Richard) recently gave some behind-the-scenes insight into just how far Bernthal is willing to go for his character. Apparently, for one of the most pivotal scenes in the special, Bernthal insisted on doing his own fire stunt. We're talking 'practical flames' here. Real fire. You can imagine the insurance department's heart rate during that conversation.

Or, as Green explained it to ScreenRant:

'Legit flames, legit practical flames, and everyone was trying to walk him off the ledge, myself included. I'm like, "You sure you want to do this? But if you want to go back, we're going to go back for you to do this." But it's not for the faint of heart to put yourself through that kind of experience... But he didn't do it to look cool. I think that's what makes Jon so special. He did it because it was important to the story, it was important to the character.'

It does seem like a classic Bernthal move—not interested in putting on a show for showboating's sake, but because the story needed it. Green kept emphasizing that this was all about doing justice (no pun intended) to Frank Castle and the fans, and that the whole team wanted the moment to feel ‘real.’ Safe to say, burning yourself on camera does hit a bit differently than acting in front of a green screen.

Some Context for the Flames

Just in case anyone thinks this was some throwaway scene, Green says this moment is a turning point for Frank Castle in the story—a make-or-break scene that needed to look and feel as intense as Castle's PTSD-filled rage. Having your #1 lead on the call sheet actually go up in flames isn’t exactly run-of-the-mill Marvel production.

Big Stunt, Bigger Plans

For Bernthal fans, the good news is that he’s not done with the character. He’ll be bringing the Punisher back in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (with Tom Holland) when that hits theaters on July 31, 2026. So if you’re hoping for more wild, borderline reckless commitment from Bernthal, apparently you won’t have to wait too long.

  • The Punisher: One Last Kill is now streaming on Disney+ as a 51-minute special
  • Jon Bernthal literally, physically did a fire stunt for a major scene
  • Director Reinaldo Marcus Green says this was all for the sake of authenticity, not just to look ‘cool’
  • Bernthal will return as Frank Castle in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31, 2026)

So, for anyone still pining for the old-school, stunt-gone-slightly-mad flavor in their superhero stories, Jon Bernthal’s Punisher might be the last of a dying breed—or, judging by that fire stunt, he’s just getting warmed up.
