Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson Set for Hunger Games Return
After a decade away, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are set to reprise their iconic roles in the much-anticipated Hunger Games prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping. Find out what’s in store for fans.
After ten years away from the world of Panem, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson are preparing to step back into their celebrated roles. The pair will feature in Lionsgate’s forthcoming prequel, Sunrise on the Reaping, as confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Lawrence is set to return as Katniss Everdeen, while Hutcherson will once again portray Peeta Mellark.
Fans of Suzanne Collins’ latest addition to the Hunger Games series may not be entirely surprised by this news, as both characters make brief appearances in the new novel. Audiences were first introduced to Lawrence’s determined archer and Hutcherson’s reserved baker in the 2012 film adaptation, where they were forced to compete in a brutal televised contest designed to maintain order in their dystopian society. The subsequent films, Catching Fire and the two-part Mockingjay, followed their ongoing struggle to topple President Snow’s oppressive regime.
Returning to Panem’s Past
Sunrise on the Reaping transports viewers 24 years prior to the events of the original story, focusing on the 50th Hunger Games. This particular Games is notable for featuring Hamish Abernathy, who would later become a mentor to Katniss and Peeta. Given the timeline, some may wonder how the two main characters will fit into a narrative set decades before their own Games. While Lionsgate has yet to reveal specifics, it is widely expected that their appearances will be woven in through flash-forwards.
The cast for this prequel is shaping up to be rather impressive. Joseph Zada will take on the role of Hamish, with Ralph Fiennes portraying Snow. Jesse Plemons is set to appear as Plutarch Heavensbee, Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Beetee Latier, Kieran Culkin as Caesar Flickerman, and Elle Fanning as Effie Trinket. The ensemble is rounded out by Glenn Close, McKenna Grace, Maya Hawke, and Whitney Peak.
Passing the Torch
In a recent conversation with GamesRadar+, prior to the official announcement, Hutcherson reflected on the enduring appeal of the franchise.
"It's amazing. And for me, I think it's so cool to pass it off to another generation. You know, to have been a part of The Hunger Games was one of the coolest things I've gotten to do in my whole life. And to see now a new wave of actors coming into these roles and coming into this world."
Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on 20 November 2026, promising to draw both long-time followers and newcomers into the ever-expanding universe of Panem. For those keen to explore more, there’s always a fresh selection of science fiction films and upcoming releases to look forward to.
