Van Damme takes the helm in a World War II submarine epic, plunging into a claustrophobic, depth-charge showdown beneath enemy waters.

Jean-Claude Van Damme is back in the fight—this time, trading roundhouse kicks for torpedoes. If you grew up on VHS bloodsport, his name basically defines '90s action. The guy played his own evil twin in Double Impact, fought his way through the weird wasteland of Cyborg, and made Kickboxer a rite of passage for anyone with a Blockbuster card. Now, he’s jumping into a World War II sub drama called Raid Pacific. And yes, it’s based on actual events (for once, nobody is time-traveling or entering underground tournaments).

What’s the Story?

Raid Pacific is set right after Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, so the stakes are immediately sky-high. Van Damme is taking on the role of Captain William Pierce, a top-tier U.S.-French submarine commander who—surprise—gets handed an impossible mission. The goal: sneak a handful of Marine raiders deep behind enemy lines and blow up a Japanese outpost that could turn the tide of the war.

So if you’re into cramped submarine flicks like Das Boot, Hunt for Red October, or U-571, this is very much in your wheelhouse. Only, this time, it’s got Van Damme presumably sweating buckets in the captain’s chair instead of trading punches in a warehouse.

Who’s Driving This Sub?

The movie is directed by Steven Luke. If the name doesn’t ring a bell, he’s usually behind or in front of the camera in those gritty World War II VOD movies that have a surprising number of ’80s action legends per square inch. Luke’s got experience: he made Operation Seawolf with Dolph Lundgren and acted in stuff like War Pigs alongside Tom Berenger. On Raid Pacific, he’s sticking to what he knows—history-driven war stories, but with enough character stuff that the stakes actually land.

Here’s how Steven Luke sums it up:

'Exactly the kind of story I’m drawn to—grounded in real history, but driven by deeply human stakes.'

Who Else Is on Board?

  • Dean Bloxom: Former mortgage dude turned movie producer (yes, really), founder of Deano Productions, one of the main producers here.
  • Andre Relis from VMI Worldwide: He’s pitching the film at Cannes alongside Luke and Bloxom, trying to get international buyers on board.
  • Jean-Claude Van Damme: The film pretty much puts its chips on JCVD’s shoulders for gravitas. Producers keep piling on the praise, calling his turn as Captain Pierce full of intensity and emotional depth—in other words, this is supposed to be Van Damme’s serious side.

What’s the Pitch?

Andre Relis described the movie as a 'powerful cinematic experience' with Van Damme bringing 'gravitas and intensity' to his role. They’re really gunning for the war-movie purists and old-school action fans:

'A story of resilience, sacrifice and leadership under extreme pressure, with Jean-Claude Van Damme bringing gravitas and intensity to the role of Captain Pierce, and Steven Luke’s proven ability to craft compelling WWII narratives, this film promises to deliver a powerful cinematic experience.'

Meanwhile, Dean Bloxom is banking on audiences following Van Damme underwater: 'Having Jean-Claude Van Damme step into the role of Captain Pierce brings a unique intensity and emotional depth that will elevate this production in a powerful way. I’m excited to connect audiences with this intense, immersive journey beneath the surface of the Pacific.'

Will It Work?

Let’s not ignore the elephant in the room: Van Damme’s off-screen life has gotten a little rocky over the years, and some recent legal clouds haven’t helped. Still, if you’re able to focus on the movie apart from his personal headlines, Raid Pacific could end up as that rare late-career role that lets an action icon flex a different kind of muscle. Either way, it’s definitely going to be more interesting than your average forgettable streaming war movie. We’ll see if JCVD really can steer a sub as well as he can do the splits.
