Jay Pharoah’s Unforgettable SNL Showdown With Bill Murray
Jay Pharoah reveals the moment he stood up to Bill Murray backstage at SNL, describing a dramatic encounter that left both men reeling. What really happened behind the scenes?
Bill Murray’s unpredictable behaviour has long been a talking point in the entertainment world. Known for his offbeat antics and a tendency to ruffle feathers, he’s found himself at the centre of more than a few on-set incidents. From his infamous rows with Richard Dreyfuss during the filming of What About Bob? to the much-publicised clash with Lucy Liu on Charlie’s Angels, Murray’s reputation for stirring up trouble precedes him. He’s also had his share of disagreements with the likes of McG, Chevy Chase, Anjelica Huston, and Harold Ramis, each recounting their own stories of difficult encounters.
Despite his celebrity status and the media frenzy that often follows him, most people would think twice before physically confronting Murray. Yet, Jay Pharoah, a former Saturday Night Live cast member, found himself doing just that. When asked by Shannon Sharpe about the incident, Pharoah’s explanation was straightforward:
“He wouldn’t stop hitting me.”
Unexpected Tensions Backstage
The confrontation unfolded in Lorne Michaels’ office, where Pharoah had gone for a chat with the SNL boss. To his surprise, he found Murray there, who wasted no time in making his presence felt. According to Pharoah, Murray greeted him with,
“Come here, fat boy,”
a remark that set the tone for what followed. The situation quickly escalated as Murray began repeatedly striking Pharoah in the same spot.
“He calls me ‘fat boy’, then he gets on me. He starts hitting me, in the same place, over and over again. Right. Now, I don’t give a damn who you are. If you hit somebody in the same place, eventually, it’s going to start getting a little sore.”
As the discomfort grew, Pharoah realised he had to take action.
“When it started stinging, I said, ‘I gotta drop him, son.’”
Without hesitation, he lifted Murray onto his shoulders and slammed him down onto the sofa in Michaels’ office. Even then, Murray persisted, continuing to lash out.
Aftermath and Reflection
Pharoah speculated that Murray was
“Drunk out of his mind. No recollection, probably, of this. But I slammed him, and I had to hold him down. He was still trying to fight me! But he was just attacking me, and I got him.”
With the scuffle over, Pharoah left Murray sprawled on the couch, presumably to reflect on his actions.
For Pharoah, the decision to stand his ground was a matter of principle. If someone lashes out without provocation, why should they be immune from consequences simply because of their fame? Many in the industry have likely imagined doing the same, but Pharoah was the one who actually followed through, leaving a lasting impression on all who witnessed the exchange.
