Jason Statham and Ben Foster ignite a hard-hitting 2011 remake of a 70s action classic, now streaming free.

If you somehow missed peak Jason Statham in the 2010s, or you just want a throwback hitman flick with the trademark Stath flavor, here’s a heads-up: 'The Mechanic' – the 2011 remake, not the original Charles Bronson version – just landed on Pluto TV, and it might be the most quintessentially Statham movie you haven’t seen in a while.

The Stath Takes Over an Old-School Killer Role

This 2011 update of the ’72 action thriller brings Statham in to replace Bronson as Arthur Bishop, a hitman who’s a master at making his hits look like accidents (honestly, the Occupational Health and Safety admin would have a field day if he wasn’t, you know, murdering people for money). Simon West (of 'Con Air' fame) directed, and the supporting cast is legit stacked: Donald Sutherland, Tony Goldwyn, Ben Foster chewing up all the tragic sidekick scenery, and even David Leitch – yes, future 'John Wick' mastermind – stops by to fight The Stath himself. Not a bad lineup for what's ultimately an assassin movie where half the fun is watching Statham dispatch people in increasingly creative ways.

Plot in a Nutshell

So, Statham's Arthur Bishop gets handed a job that hits close to home: his mentor Harry (Donald Sutherland) is targeted, and when Arthur goes through with it, he ends up taking Harry's son (played by Ben Foster) under his wing. Obviously, this mentorship has 'giant lie at the center of our relationship' energy, and, to no one's surprise, that tension eventually explodes into bullets and mayhem. If you’ve seen the original, the bones are the same – but this one has smoother editing, bigger explosions, and way more Statham.

Cast & Why It Works

  • Jason Statham as Arthur Bishop, professional mechanic/assassin who looks perpetually annoyed in an appealing way
  • Ben Foster as the damaged, vengeful apprentice – and honestly, if you only know him from random character roles, get ready for some actual depth
  • Donald Sutherland as Harry, Mentor-in-Peril
  • Tony Goldwyn as the guy pulling all the strings
  • And yes, a blink-and-you'll-miss-him David Leitch goes toe-to-toe with Statham just to check that bucket list item early

Reception? Not Exactly a Critical Darling

Look, the Rotten Tomatoes numbers aren’t going to sell you here: mid-50s from both critics and audiences. Real talk, if you want a deeply original character study, this won’t move you. But if you’re into high-adrenaline, Statham-brand action—mysterious main character, slick set pieces, creative assassination methods, and surprisingly effective personal stakes—this one’s got the goods.

The Franchise Factor

Somewhat surprisingly, 'The Mechanic' brought in over $76 million at the box office on a $40 million budget—a tidy profit for an R-rated action flick. That was enough to greenlight 'Mechanic: Resurrection' (2016), which amped up the globe-trotting hijinks and pulled in a whopping $125 million on a similar budget. The sequel is, if anything, even wilder, and you can currently stream it on Tubi for free. Not that I’m recommending binge-watching both back-to-back unless you really like swimming pools on skyscraper rooftops.

Could There Be a 'Mechanic 3'?

There’s nothing official on the docket, but never say never. Director Simon West—who’s collaborated with Statham three times now—basically told MovieWeb he’s always on the lookout for another project with The Stath. The two genuinely seem to like working together, so if the right idea comes along, don’t be shocked if we get another installment (or at least some new action chaos from those two).

'I mean, I’ve done three movies with Jason, and we always enjoy working with each other. And I think, you know, we’re both proud of the films we did together. So every now and again, you know, there’ll be something that comes up and I think, “Oh, Jason might like this.” And if, if you know he’s available or is interested, he hasn’t done something like it, we would definitely talk about it. So I’m sure we’ll do something in the future together, because we really enjoy working together. It’s just got to be the right thing for both of us.'

While You Wait for New Statham, Start Here

While Statham’s next wave of action movies are lining up—including 'Mutiny', 'The Beekeeper 2', and, yes, what sounds like a parody project called 'Jason Statham Stole My Bike' (seriously)—'The Mechanic' is now free to stream on Pluto and should hit the spot if your mood is less 'serious art' and more 'vicariously punch people through windows.' Enjoy.
