Jamie Lee Curtis Locks Release Date for Big-Screen Reboot of a Beloved TV Classic
Universal locks in a date for Murder, She Wrote as Academy Award winner Jamie Lee Curtis brings Angela Lansbury’s beloved TV sleuth to the big screen.
Well, this just got interesting: Universal Pictures is officially making a Murder, She Wrote movie, and now we finally have a release date. Jamie Lee Curtis—yes, Laurie Strode herself—is snagging the lead, stepping into the legendary shoes once worn by Angela Lansbury. If you grew up watching reruns of Lansbury solving murders in cozy sweaters, brace yourself for this update.
Jamie Lee Curtis Heads to Cabot Cove (Sort Of)
Universal has circled December 22, 2027 for the premiere, which is… honestly, pretty far off, but at least we can mark our calendars. They’re banking on holiday moviegoers, and for some reason, think it’s a good idea to go head-to-head with Sony’s animated flick Buds and a frankly wild December that also includes another Lord of the Rings project (The Hunt for Gollum), Nancy Meyers’ mystery comedy with a big-name cast, and—oh yeah—Marvel’s latest giant tentpole, Avengers: Secret Wars. No pressure, right?
Who’s Behind the Curtain?
This isn’t just some lazy IP cash-in (well, not completely). The director is Jason Moore, who you might know from Pitch Perfect or Sisters. The writing duo Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo are handling the script. As for the producing team, it’s stacked: Amy Pascal (who has a hand in pretty much everything at Sony), and the Lord/Miller team—Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Aditya Sood. Fun inside Hollywood tidbit: This movie is actually part of Lord Miller’s first-look deal with Universal, so expect their fingerprints all over it.

In Case You Forgot the Original
The old-school Murder, She Wrote ran from 1984 to 1996 with Angela Lansbury as Jessica Fletcher—a retired English teacher who also happens to be a bestselling mystery novelist and, not so coincidentally, finds herself solving murders left and right. The show was practically a masterclass in 'cozy crime' and made Lansbury a TV icon. She snagged four Golden Globes for her trouble, and the show also featured repeat appearances from Tom Bosley, William Windom, Ron Masak, Will Nye, and Louis Herthum.
So, What Did Jamie Lee Curtis Have to Say?
If you want the buzz straight from Curtis (and let’s face it, why wouldn’t you?), here’s her big quote on the project:
'Jessica Fletcher has always been a personal hero of mine, and getting to put my spin on this role is a true honor.'
She’s not wrong—stepping into Lansbury’s shoes is a bold move, and it’s going to be wild to see how they update Cabot Cove for the 2020s. Or, you know, wherever the murders happen this time around.
Bottom line: It’s a long wait for this reboot, but with Curtis involved and a killer (ha) production team, I’m at least cautiously optimistic. Let’s just hope they keep at least one episode’s worth of murder in the movie.
