M3GAN fans, rejoice: Ted Lasso’s Matt Lipsey is developing an AI sci-fi with James McAvoy and Joey King — and there’s a title to discover.

If you liked M3GAN but thought her vibe could do with a British accent and a healthy chunk of emotional trauma, there’s something in the works that’s bang on target. Matt Lipsey – yes, the same chap who's directed episodes of Ted Lasso – is now busy making an artificial intelligence film called Almost You, and he’s lined up a pretty sharp cast for it.

The core trio? James McAvoy, Joey King, and Juno Temple. All heavy hitters in their own right. The film, which is already shooting over in Glasgow, has attracted a fair bit of attention for a very 2026 reason: it’s all about the hazards of mixing grief and tech, especially when your solution to loss is to manufacture a digital ghost in your living room.

Almost You is currently in production in Glasgow with James McAvoy, Joey King, and Juno Temple leading the cast.

Who’s Who

  • Joey King — probably most familiar for The Act and The Kissing Booth, plays Phoebe, a robotic engineer with a brain for circuits and a heart broken by loss.
  • Juno Temple — known from Ted Lasso and Fargo, joins as Edie, Phoebe’s deceased younger sister.
  • James McAvoy — the 47-year-old who’s been everywhere from Atonement to X-Men: First Class — his exact role is still a bit under wraps, but you can bank on McAvoy bringing his standard unpredictability.

The casting agencies are a maze of acronyms, but to skim through: Temple’s got UTA and friends covering her, King is WME–Brillstein, and McAvoy is doing the United Agents–UTA circuit. Practically needs a football manager to keep track.

The Story (and the Sci-Fi Weirdness)

The plot goes like this. King’s character, Phoebe, can’t quite shake losing her sister Edie (Temple). Being a whizz with AI, she crunches through Edie’s old texts, videos, endless social feeds, and manages to build a working AI version of her little sister. Now, if you’re thinking “That won’t end well”… you’re absolutely right. The film piles on the tension as Phoebe comes face to face with what it means to digitally resurrect a loved one, and why sometimes it really is best to let sleeping ghosts lie.

Here’s how Matt Lipsey explained it to Variety when the news broke:

There’s never been a movie that needed to be made more than this one. We thought we were making a film about the future. It turns out it’s about right now. Juno, Joey and James will make you laugh, then break your heart, then make you laugh about it.

The project’s getting its international distribution handled by Bankside Films, with UTA Independent Film Group looking after UK and North American sales. Basically, keep an eye out, because when this thing finally lands in cinemas or on streaming, you won’t have long to wait for the ‘AI gone emotional’ think-pieces.
