Announced with fanfare years ago, a long-promised DCU movie has been shelved — and James Gunn just made it official.

Even by superhero franchise standards, the DCU has been on a rollercoaster lately. There’s fresh excitement swirling around early standouts like Creature Commandos and James Gunn’s much-hyped Superman reboot (out next year). Peacemaker season two is still a bright spot, and both Supergirl and the Lanterns series are lining up for a big 2025 showing. Heck, the first teaser for Mike Flanagan’s Clayface just dropped, and it’s as weird and wild as you’d want from a Batman villain spin-off.

All of that makes it extra awkward that one of the DCU’s officially announced movies has just been tossed on the scrap heap - at least for now. If you were excited for The Authority, you might want to take a seat. James Gunn himself finally addressed what’s actually happening with that one, and the answer is... not much, actually.

From Big Reveal to 'Not Happening Anytime Soon'

Let’s rewind a second: Gunn and Peter Safran came out swinging when they took over the DC movie machine. They pitched a slate full of familiar heroes and oddball picks—a mix of big guns like Superman and the Bat-family, but also stuff like Teen Titans, Booster Gold, and, yes, The Authority.

Some of those projects are moving along (The Brave and the Bold Batman, for example). Others have quietly slipped away; the Arkham Asylum series is officially toast, and now The Authority joins the maybe-someday pile.

So, why is The Authority—a 2023-announced project and a big deal for DC comics fans—suddenly off the table? Here’s where it gets a bit, well, comic book-y.

How It All Unraveled

  • The Rumor Mill Goes Wild: Fans were speculating about The Authority online, especially after rumors floated that Gunn himself might be writing it.
  • Gunn Sets the Record Straight: On Threads (the social app, not an alternate Earth), Gunn jumped into the conversation. He clarified that he’d never planned to write or direct The Authority—his plate is obviously overflowing already.
  • The Script Wasn’t Ready—and the Timing Was Worse: Gunn said straight up, the script 'wasn’t quite there.' More importantly, it didn’t fit the bigger DCU plans, either for story reasons or more practical, behind-the-scenes issues.
  • It’s Dead for Now, But Not Forever: Gunn left the door open... a crack. Basically, it’s not happening 'anytime soon.' If you’re holding out for Apollo, Midnighter, or Jenny Sparks at the movies, you’ll be waiting a while.
"Just a normal slip of the tongue. I would have never had time to do this and although I know this is a popular theory online I never had an intention of writing or directing The Authority. The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon."

What Even Is The Authority?

Here’s why this one mattered: The Authority isn’t just another Justice League or Avengers clone. Created by Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch back in 1999, it’s a superhero book where the team is a little more ruthless (some would say 'edgy', but I won’t). They’ve got a wild roster, including The Engineer (already showing up in Gunn’s Superman), as well as characters like Jenny Sparks, Apollo, and Midnighter—if you know, you know.

Even with the solo Authority movie on ice, Gunn is clearly into these characters—so don’t be shocked if a few more start popping up across the new DCU, even if they’re relegated to cameos or side roles for the next few years.

The DCU Isn’t Slowing Down

This is all playing out while the rest of the DCU moves ahead at full speed (well, full speed for a giant studio still rebooting half its universe). Flanagan’s take on Clayface is shaping up to be a body-horror curveball that could break all the superhero rules. The new Superman (officially called Man of Tomorrow) promises Brainiac as the villain—a massive deal for DC fans.

If you’re disappointed by The Authority news, you’re not alone. But with Gunn openly interested in their world and a raft of new projects in the pipeline, their time in the DCU spotlight could still come. For now though, don’t expect an Authority movie to hit theaters any time soon. Blame scripts, scheduling, or just the weird science of studio decisions—your guess is as good as mine.
