James Gunn just locked in where Supergirl lands in the new DCU timeline, giving fans the clearest look yet at how the next slate lines up. The DC Studios chief confirmed the placement in a Threads reply, tightening the roadmap for what’s coming next.

If you've been scratching your head wondering exactly where Supergirl is supposed to fit in the new-and-supposedly-improved DC movie universe, James Gunn has finally cleared things up – and in the kind of blunt, no-fuss way I actually appreciate.

So, Where Exactly Is Supergirl Landing in the DCU?

Someone on Threads actually went out and asked Gunn – as in, "Hey James, does Supergirl happen before or after the new Superman? And what about this Man of Tomorrow thing?" Gunn shot back: "In between Superman and Man of Tomorrow."

So that answers that. The new Supergirl lands right between the 2025 Superman movie (which kicks off DCU Chapter One: Gods and Monsters) and the still-mysterious Man of Tomorrow (set for July 9, 2027). Supergirl herself touches down on June 26, 2026.

This Is Not Your Cheerful, Hopeful Kryptonian

If you're expecting the bubbly, always-up-for-justice Supergirl… well, not this time. The version showing up here is a serious anti-hero — Kara's backstory is pure DC tragedy. She watched just about everyone she knew die on that doomed chunk of Krypton. That’ll ruin anyone's day.

Here's how the movie lines up:

  • Milly Alcock (yeah, from House of the Dragon) stars as Kara Zor-El. She's not having a great 23rd birthday — she's basically kind of a wreck, wandering the galaxy with her loyal dog Krypto. Krypto, by the way, might be the single least controversial thing about this movie.
  • Eve Ridley plays Ruthye Marye Knoll, a kid who crosses Kara's path and (as these stories go) ends up in some interplanetary vengeance quest.
  • Matthias Schoenaerts is Krem of the Yellow Hills, because you can never have enough space pirates.
  • And yes, Jason Momoa is Lobo. It's official. Gunn's really just not letting any DC toy sit on the shelf.

Director, Writer, and Other Behind-the-Scenes Bits

Craig Gillespie (I, Tonya, Cruella) is directing — which is honestly a surprise pick if you've seen his previous work, but maybe that's the point. Ana Nogueira wrote the script, so at least there should be some fun and fresh angles.

Gunn and Peter Safran have been running the DCU ship since late 2022 after Gunn proved he could do fun, violent, and weird with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker.

What You Actually Need to Know

Supergirl is sandwiched between the new Superman (2025) and Man of Tomorrow (2027) in DCU continuity — and apparently, Gunn's sticking to a Star Wars-style timeline, but not necessarily in release order. It's all meant to line up (eventually).

"In between Superman and Man of Tomorrow." – James Gunn, keeping it blunt as always.

So if you're trying to map out how all these characters and stories fit together, you finally have one less headache.
