James Gunn Dispels DCU Casting Rumours and Teases New Heroine
James Gunn addresses swirling speculation about the next Wonder Woman, Batman, and Flash, while hinting at a mysterious female role in the upcoming Superman sequel. The DCU’s future remains intriguingly uncertain.
With Gal Gadot having stepped away from her iconic role, speculation has been rife about who might next don the tiara. James Gunn, never one to shy away from fan queries, recently took to Threads to address the mounting chatter. When pressed on whether auditions for Batman had taken place towards the end of 2025, Gunn was quick to dismiss the notion, adding that any talk of Wonder Woman casting was equally unfounded.
He clarified,
We’re also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished.
Rumours had also begun to swirl that Wonder Woman would make an appearance in the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Gunn, however, poured cold water on those claims, stating that while a female character is indeed being cast for the film, it is not the Amazonian warrior. The identity of this new addition remains under wraps, but the director’s comments have set fans’ imaginations racing. Some are hoping for Maxima, the formidable queen from Almerac, while others fancy Jenny Sparks, leader of Stormwatch and The Authority, as a strong contender.
Wonder Woman’s Future Remains Uncertain
Gunn has been rather forthright about the process for selecting the next Wonder Woman. Last year, he made it clear that no casting discussions would even begin until a script was in place. He wrote,
We’re also not casting WW, nor even discussing it, until a script is finished.
When asked about reports suggesting a Wonder Woman film was being fast-tracked, Gunn responded,
It’s a priority, but I wouldn’t call that fast-tracked. Nothing is going to be shot unless we’re as sure as we can be that the script is good.
He’s repeatedly emphasised that the new DCU will not move forward on any project without a solid script. This approach has led to a fair bit of frustration among fans, who are eager for news but left with little more than speculation. For instance, when Gunn followed actress Adria Arjona on Instagram, the rumour mill went into overdrive, with many convinced she was set to play Wonder Woman. Gunn was forced to clarify,
I follow Adria on Instagram but everybody came out [and said], ‘He just followed her, that means she’s Wonder Woman.’ She’d be a great Wonder Woman, by the way. She was in a film that I made seven years ago. We’ve been friends and have known each other since that time. I followed her then, I didn’t just follow her.
At present, there’s been no official word on the untitled Wonder Woman project.
Updates on Batman and Flash: Scripts Before Stars
Gunn has also been busy quashing other DCU-related rumours. Reports had suggested that the upcoming Brave and the Bold, directed by Andy Muschietti, was eyeing a 2028 release and would centre on Batman and Damian Wayne. Gunn dismissed these claims as “fiction,” noting that the screenplay is far from complete.
Questions about secret test screenings for Batman were met with Gunn’s trademark candour, as he flatly denied any such events had taken place. The same goes for speculation about Grant Gustin reprising his role as Flash in the new universe. Gunn has made it abundantly clear that casting decisions will only follow once scripts are finalised, and he appears in no rush to reveal who will take up the mantle of the Scarlet Speedster.
With so much up in the air, fans are left to wonder who might eventually step into these legendary roles. For now, all eyes are on the scriptwriters, as the future of the DCU continues to unfold behind closed doors.
Man of Tomorrow is scheduled for release on 9 July 2027.
