Andy and Barbara Muschietti reveal new progress on a long-awaited IT supercut, promising fresh scenes and a single, extended narrative. Studio interest is high, but more filming is still on the cards.

Stephen King's works rarely stay untouched for long, and the world of IT is no exception. With the first season of the spin-off series IT: Welcome to Derry recently wrapping up on HBO, attention has shifted back to the films. Andy Muschietti, who helmed both cinematic chapters and directed several episodes of the new series, has now offered a fresh update on the much-discussed supercut that would unite both films into one sprawling epic.

Previously, Muschietti described the project as a 'big dream' that had yet to materialise, largely due to his commitments with the television series. However, a recent interview in Spanish with Andy and producer Barbara Muschietti suggests the project is now gathering pace. Andy explained that the plan is to weave the two films together into a single, continuous story, complete with additional and extended scenes. Some of these new moments, he admitted, have yet to be shot. Barbara pointed out that the main obstacle is carving out the time, but Andy remains optimistic, saying he believes the studio is keen to back the venture.

Ambitious Plans and Studio Backing

The original IT film clocks in at 2 hours and 15 minutes, while its follow-up stretches to 2 hours and 49 minutes. Combining them, especially with extra material, would result in a marathon experience—one likely to appeal to die-hard fans. The approach is reminiscent of Warner Bros.' previous foray into extended editions, most notably with Zack Snyder's Justice League. Given the strong debut of IT: Welcome to Derry on HBO, which quickly became one of the platform's most-watched launches, there’s little doubt that appetite for more remains robust. The question of a second series, however, is still up in the air, and could influence the Muschiettis’ availability for further filming.

Barbara Muschietti acknowledged the logistical challenge, remarking that finding the right window for additional shoots is no small feat. Yet, Andy’s confidence in the studio’s enthusiasm suggests the project is more than just wishful thinking. The prospect of new footage, especially scenes that never made it into the original releases, is sure to intrigue those who have followed the story from the start.

What Fans Can Expect

For those eager to stay in the loop, there’s the option to sign up for a newsletter dedicated to all things IT, promising deeper dives into adaptations and related developments. While both films enjoyed considerable success, the second instalment has often been regarded as a notch below its predecessor. The supercut, with its promise of fresh material and a reimagined structure, could well address some of the criticisms levelled at the latter half of the saga.

Official confirmation from the studio is still pending, but the Muschiettis’ comments mark the clearest indication yet that the project is moving forward. As Andy put it, the ambition is to create a seamless narrative that does justice to King’s original vision, while offering something genuinely new for audiences who thought they’d seen it all.
