Highlander First Look Drops at CinemaCon as Henry Cavill Battles Through Centuries
First look: John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s action-fantasy reboot arrives blade-first, packed with razor-sharp duels and wall-to-wall swordplay.
Well, the wait’s over—if only for a sneak peek. Henry Cavill has officially stepped into the Highlander boots, and the first footage from the long-awaited reboot just dropped. Yeah, that’s right: the swords, the immortality, the 'there can be only one' thing—it’s all coming back, but this time with some serious John Wick flavor.
Cavill + Stahelski = Neon Sword Fights
Let’s get the basics out of the way: Chad Stahelski (the guy behind John Wick, who apparently only makes movies about immortals with killer stares and questionable emotional arcs) is directing, and he’s bringing some of that neon-lit, bone-crunching action with him. Amazon MGM Studios is behind this thing, and they just showed off the first proper footage at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
And, yes, the action basically looks exactly like you’d expect from the dude who gave us Baba Yaga—think dark city streets, frantic swordplay, and a crowded rave glowing in about seven different shades of LED. Variety mentioned that they’re not just swinging swords around: there are motorcycle chases, too, because apparently swords alone are too old-school now.
Who Plays Who? Here’s The Lineup
- Henry Cavill: He’s our new Connor MacLeod, complete with a Scottish accent that’s actually Scottish this time (no offense to Christopher Lambert, whose accent in the original was…let’s call it mysterious).
- Russell Crowe: He’s stepping into the mentor role—originally done by Sean Connery—so expect all the grizzled wisdom and dramatic hair.
- Jeremy Irons: Another alum from Cavill’s blockbuster past, though details on his character are still under wraps.
- Dave Bautista: He’s the main villain, The Kurgan—think huge, menacing, and loves a swordfight. The footage apparently shows him going at it with Cavill’s character in the middle of World War II, because why not?
What’s Actually Happening in this Version?
According to what was shown, Cavill’s Highlander has been alive and (not exactly) kicking since 1518. He’s stuck fighting other immortals at something called The Gathering—yes, classic Highlander canon—and the whole 'there can be only one' business is still very much the driving force here.
The preview mixed some behind-the-scenes looks with the main footage, so there’s a heavy dose of 'here’s how we made everyone look cool swinging a sword while EDM pumps in the background.' If you were worried this would look cheap, don’t—at least from what’s been shown, the John Wick DNA is obvious.
When’s It Out?
No release date just yet, so you’ll have to keep checking for updates. But the cameras are rolling and the hype machine has officially started.
'There can be only one.'
Look, anytime you reboot a cult classic, especially with a cast that reads like a Comic-Con afterparty, there’s room for things to go off the rails. But if you wanted swords, neon, and maybe fewer questionable accents, this first look might have you feeling cautiously optimistic.
Stay tuned—this is just getting started.
