Boycott buzz fizzles as a breakout streaming special supercharges demand for HBO’s Harry Potter reboot.

So, HBO is rolling out a Harry Potter TV reboot this December, and to call it 'highly anticipated' feels like underselling it. Whether you love the idea, hate it, or are just plain tired of Potter-world drama, there’s no denying this thing is about to be everywhere — and, apparently, already is.

A Little Glimpse Behind the Curtain

Even though the actual series isn’t streaming until Christmas, HBO’s already testing the waters with a behind-the-scenes special called Finding Harry: The Craft Behind the Magic. If you think everyone’s done with the wizarding world, the numbers beg to differ: after dropping on HBO Max on April 5, this 26-minute making-of shot straight to the top of the global streaming charts (according to Flix Patrol). We’re talking bigger than Anaconda, higher-ranked than 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple — basically, it’s Hogwarts vs. The World, and Hogwarts is winning.

In the U.S., it’s sitting comfortably as the #4 HBO movie, just behind safe bets like The Mummy and Ballerina. Not bad for a fancy promo reel.

Who's in This Thing?

  • The making-of doc throws the spotlight on the new, younger cast (so, yes, there’s a fresh face playing Harry).
  • Paapa Essiedu is taking on the role of Severus Snape — which, predictably, has some corners of the internet deeply annoyed for reasons ranging from the boring to the ugly.
  • Real, practical creature effects (less digital fluff, more 'whoa, that’s actually there').
  • Giant sets, over-the-top costumes — they’re clearly not skimping on the spectacle.

The Boycotts, the Backlash, the Same Old Arguments

Of course, nothing Harry Potter-related is ever simple these days. Ever since HBO announced the reboot back in 2023, controversy’s been bubbling — starting with J.K. Rowling herself. Her anti-trans views and the launch of her Women’s Fund (which basically bankrolls legal efforts to restrict trans rights) have led plenty of people to call for boycotts of anything with Harry’s lightning bolt on it.

That’s only half the story, though. There’s also grumbling from the 'Why isn’t Snape exactly like Alan Rickman?' crowd, thanks to Essiedu’s casting. If Twitter’s to be believed, the show was doomed before it began — and yet, the actual streaming numbers tell a different story.

Smashing Records Before It's Even Out

If you need more proof that nostalgia (and curiosity) are still a license to print money, there’s this: the teaser trailer for the reboot hit the internet on March 25, and racked up over 277 million organic views within its first 48 hours. For HBO and HBO Max, that’s an all-time record for a series trailer. Not too shabby for a franchise that first took off a quarter-century ago.

'It’s clear that no matter what, Harry Potter still has the ability to cast a spell over people who grew up with the series, and newcomers to the franchise.'

Will the show survive ten years of constant internet crossfire? Who knows. But if the runaway success of both the promo special and the trailer are any sign, a whole new generation is about to get sorted into their house on streaming night, and HBO will almost certainly be counting the Galleons come Christmas.
