HBO Boss Finally Reveals Where Harry Potter Season 2 Stands
HBO is already lining up year two of Harry Potter, with chairman Casey Bloys confirming Season 2 writing is underway and hinting at a swift return after the series debuts.
Alright, so HBO isn’t even done shooting its big new 'Harry Potter' series, and the suits upstairs are already racing ahead to Season 2. This isn’t just wishful thinking either—according to HBO boss Casey Bloys, they’ve got writers officially cracking on the next batch of episodes, even while cameras are still rolling on Season 1.
Trying to Keep Momentum (And Keep Kids from Suddenly Turning 30)
Here’s what’s going on: Bloys actually told The Times of London that they want to avoid dragging things out too long between seasons, and there’s a specific reason—those young Hogwarts actors aren't getting any younger. To quote Bloys, and this is worth spelling out:
"Our goal is to not have a huge gap, you know, especially because the kids are growing. It’s not going to be...annual; the show is too big and too massive. But...they’re writing...season two now."
So, don’t expect a new season to drop every single year (which, honestly, makes sense given the wild visual effects and sheer bloat of a Harry Potter production). Still, Bloys sounds determined to prevent some three-year downtime where the cast goes from first-years to college students offscreen.
He did admit in a 2025 press conference (yes, they’re playing the long game with all this planning) that there will be some gap between shooting cycles. In his words: 'The plan is to still try and get it—I don't know if it's going to be like stop shooting Season 1 on Friday and start Season 2 on Monday. There’ll be a break in there, but we’re going to do whatever we can to not have a huge gap.' In other words: they want to keep the momentum, but this is not going to be a Marvel assembly line.
Meet the New Kids (& Faculty) at Hogwarts
Let’s talk about who’s actually wearing the robes this time. Clark Kent–style newcomers are leading the cast, with Dominic McLaughlin as Harry, Alastair Stout as Ron, and Arabella Stanton taking on Hermione. If you’re wondering about the adult side of things, here’s your list:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Nick Frost as Hagrid
I’ll just say it: That’s a lineup with some curveballs—John Lithgow as Dumbledore is wild and very much not the casting anyone had on their bingo card, but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t morbidly curious.
Seven Years at Hogwarts (for TV, at Least)
The plan here is ambitious: they want to run a full seven seasons, sticking to the template of J.K. Rowling’s books—one book, one season. The show itself is being shot at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, with Francesca Gardiner running the show and Mark Mylod directing quite a bit of it.
Season 1 started filming in 2025, and they’re already talking about rolling out Season 2 sometime in 2027. You have to give HBO some credit for betting big and planning ahead, even if everyone’s probably crossing their fingers that the young cast doesn’t pull a 'Stranger Things' and outgrow their roles way too fast.
