Harry Shum Jr. wants to return to Glee and Crazy Rich Asians: “I would love to try and find a way”
A Grey’s Anatomy star has opened up about coming back to Glee and Crazy Rich Asians — here’s where they stand.
If you were hoping for a proper Glee or Crazy Rich Asians reunion with Harry Shum Jr. front and centre, don’t get your hopes up just yet — but don’t rule anything out either. Shum Jr., currently making waves on Dancing With the Stars, has been fielding questions about whether he’d ever slip back into those familiar roles. Here’s what he’s actually saying about it all, without the usual PR smoke and mirrors.
Still Keen on the Old Hits
After a recent Dancing With the Stars performance, Entertainment Weekly put the question directly: would he fancy returning to either franchise? Harry was clear that it’s not off the cards, even if nothing’s official — or even in the planning stages — as of now. But there’s genuine affection there, particularly for how Crazy Rich Asians left things hanging for his character Charlie Wu and Gemma Chan’s Astrid Leong at the end of the last film. Here’s Shum Jr. himself, admitting what plenty of fans have been thinking:
‘Obviously, the last of Crazy Rich Asians ended on the characters that Gemma [Chan] and I play, so I would love to try and find a way to make it work.’
Same story with Glee: Shum Jr. says juggling a packed dance schedule hasn’t dampened his enthusiasm for a proper revisit to Mike Chang territory. He made it perfectly clear he’s not tired of either world.
Busting Out the Glee Moves in the Ballroom
If you’re watching his dance routines and thinking you spot a familiar Glee shuffle, you’re not imagining it. Alongside his professional partner Jenna Johnson, Shum Jr. has been dropping hints that Dancing With the Stars could be packed with little tributes and sneaky Glee-themed references. In their chat with People mag, Johnson said the pair actively want to slip in subtle nods and what she called ‘Easter eggs’ for diehard fans. Shum Jr. backs the idea, saying those callbacks feel important, since the show has been such a big chunk of his life and career.
‘Those things are gonna be fun because you’re gonna see those elements because I know that that was a big part of my career and my life.’
Keep an eye out for those references when he hits the dancefloor. Meanwhile, you might want to start crossing fingers that he gets the phone call for either a Glee or Crazy Rich Asians sequel in the not-too-distant future.
Harry Shum Jr. remains open to returning for both Glee and Crazy Rich Asians, but nothing official is in the works yet.
