Halsey steps into the dark, co-writing and starring in a psycho-sexual horror with a Matrix director attached.

Apparently, Halsey is not content sticking to just music or dabbling in the occasional acting gig—she’s all in on movies now. And, not just any movie: her next project is a so-called 'psycho-sexual' horror film, which, if nothing else, sounds like it’s going to be a wild ride. Oh, and it has some serious Matrix DNA on board. Let’s break down what’s going on.

Halsey Gets Behind (and In Front Of) the Camera

So, here’s the deal. Halsey is co-writing and starring in a movie called Replacer. She’s pulling double-duty on this one, and she’s not going solo—her fiancé, Avan Jogia, is both co-writing and directing the thing. If that name rings a bell, you might know Jogia as an actor (he’s popped up in projects like the Amazon thriller 56 Days), but lately, he’s been making moves behind the camera, too.

Who's Pulling the Strings?

Replacer is loaded up with a stack of names behind the scenes, most of whom are mainly known to industry insiders (aka, the people actually reading the fine print at Cannes). Here’s the quick version:

  • Producer credits: Kyle Mann (Independent Edge), Isabelle Deluce (Soft Focus Films), and Damiano Tucci (Getaway Entertainment), working with a company called Anarchists United.
  • Co-producers: Olivier Picard and David Pierrat from Parce Que Films.
  • Executive producer roster: Lilly Wachowski (yes, that’s Lilly Wachowski of The Matrix infamy), alongside Anthony Li, Lawrence Mattis, Sarah Flores, Christopher Rentia, Emily McCann Lesser, and Clay Epstein.

Replacer: What’s It Actually About?

According to the official description, things are going to get pretty strange. Halsey’s playing Proxy, who’s a DJ dealing with her own set of issues—you know, standard horror-movie baggage. Stuck in Montreal, Proxy crosses paths with a mysterious artist and his crowd, who are running an underground radio station. Sounds artsy, right? Well, not for long.

The catch: their radio signal gets twisted up thanks to something weird happening deep underneath Montreal’s subway system. Cue the descent into chaos, as Proxy and her not-so-normal new friends have to figure out how to escape before they’re all transformed into something—let’s just say, much less human.

Here’s how Jogia himself sums up the vibe:

'A bright and electric club horror mashed together with a vulnerable romantic story about belonging and community. Come together. Leave as one.'

Translation: expect throbbing beats, neon-soaked dread, and probably several alarming bodily transformations.

The Business End

Replacer is currently hunting for buyers at Cannes, with CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group shopping North American rights, while Film Mode Entertainment is taking care of international deals. Halsey and Jogia will both be on site to do the meet-and-greet thing and make sure the movie actually finds a home.

The Creative Track Records

In case you’re curious what Halsey and Jogia have been up to lately, here’s a snapshot:

Halsey was recently seen in MaXXXine (the Ti West horror flick, also starring Mia Goth), and had a role in Americana, the crime thriller with Sydney Sweeney.
Jogia last acted in 56 Days (with Dove Cameron), and he’s waiting for the release of Backrooms from A24, which lands in May 2026 and has a cast that includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell.

Bottom Line

If you’re curious to see what happens when you drop Halsey into a psychedelic horror movie with emotional baggage, an underground Montreal radio station, and a splash of Matrix flavor, Replacer is definitely one to keep an eye on. Especially if you like your horror weird, sweaty, and a little bit sexy.
