Godzilla Minus Zero is on track to triple Minus One’s opening weekend
Godzilla Minus Zero is stomping toward a global box-office debut that could leave the first film’s opening looking tiny by comparison.
If you thought the last Godzilla film was a surprise box office smash, brace yourself — the big lizard is back, and it looks like the ticket sales are about to go nuclear. Godzilla Minus Zero, the follow-up to director Takashi Yamazaki's breakout monster hit, is on the cusp of absolutely dwarfing its predecessor’s numbers in North America.
Godzilla Minus Zero is on track for a $30 million North American opening weekend across more than 3,200 cinemas.
Smashing Into The Lead
The projections, courtesy of industry insiders, have Godzilla Minus Zero likely opening with around $30 million from just over 3,250 North American locations. That’s nearly three times what last year’s Godzilla Minus One pulled in on opening ($11.4 million). Not bad at all for a series that was, until recently, seen as a cult property outside Japan.
If the predictions pan out, this isn’t just a win — it’s utter dominance. The competition for Godzilla’s opening weekend is noticeably less monstrous. The Cat in the Hat, another new release, is hoping for somewhere between $20 million and $25 million, though it’s flinging itself at 4,000 screens — quite a few more than the big G. Then there’s Wild Horse Nine on a much smaller footprint: 1,000 locations and a modest target of $5-7 million. Throw in Sony-backed Ramayana: Rise of a Legend (the Indian epic chasing $6 million over four days from 1,300 cinemas), and you can see why Godzilla looks set to clear the field.
Everyone’s hedging, of course — numbers can swing when fans actually turn up or don’t. Still, the monster sequel’s forecast is so bullish you almost feel sorry for the competition.
Sequel Details: Monsters and Mayhem
This time out, Yamazaki is dropping us back into a Japan still reeling from the last bout of city-levelling destruction, set two years after the events of Godzilla Minus One. Instead of lying low, Godzilla is regenerating – not ideal for anyone hoping things would calm down. To make matters worse, King Ghidorah rears its head as the new primary tormentor. Cue chaos, military panic, and, presumably, a lot of flattened real estate.
For Godzilla devotees — or anyone just keen for a cinematic spectacle that actually moves the needle at the box office — you can catch Godzilla Minus Zero in UK cinemas from 6 November 2026.
