Gladys, The Weapons Prequel, Lands Official Release Date
Warner Bros is fast-tracking Gladys, a prequel to the hotly anticipated Weapons that traces its villain’s origins, with a release window now locked after a CinemaCon reveal.
If you thought Warner Bros. was done milking its upcoming horror universe, apparently not—because they just announced a prequel film that's all about Aunt Gladys, the villain from Zach Cregger's yet-to-be-released flick 'Weapons.' That's right: we haven’t even seen the original movie, and they're already building out this world. Can't say the studio lacks confidence.
Meet 'Gladys'—Coming September 2028
During their big CinemaCon presentation (industry folks, free popcorn, endless sizzle reels), Warner Bros. dropped a lineup update: 'Gladys' is officially on the books for September 8, 2028. If you’re marking your calendars, well, that’s a long wait to find out why this particular baddie is so twisted.
Just to refresh you: 'Gladys' is a prequel to 'Weapons,' the horror feature directed by Zach Cregger (yes, the guy behind 'Barbarian'). The prequel digs into the backstory of Aunt Gladys—a character originally played by Amy Madigan, who did win an Oscar back in the day. Whether Madigan is coming back for round two? Still a mystery at this point.
The Creative Team
- Director: Not officially named yet, but Zach Cregger is co-writing the script
- Writers: Zach Cregger & Zach Shields (who's done genre stuff before, like 'Krampus' and 'Godzilla: King of the Monsters')
- Aunt Gladys: Amy Madigan played her in 'Weapons,' but it’s unconfirmed if she’ll reprise
Warner Bros. Shooting for a Comeback
This prequel isn’t a one-off. The announcement was part of a whole parade of new titles the studio hopes will boost its output in coming years. (They dropped dates for 'The Revenge of La Llorona' and 'Final Destination 7,' too, if you care about that kind of thing.) WB’s co-chairs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy have been making noise about ramping up film production since they took over in 2022.
Apparently, box office numbers still haven’t bounced back from the pandemic days, and one big reason is simply: fewer movies. De Luca pointed out there’s been about 23% fewer major studio releases, and, in his words:
'You don't need a crystal ball to wonder what admissions might look like if that missing volume was made up for and restored.'
Basically, their plan is more movies, more chances to win (and, sure, to faceplant). They went from just six movies in 2022 to a proposed eighteen releases in 2027. So, if you’re someone who thinks streaming is taking over, WB would like to have a word.
Pam Abdy kept it real on stage, too, saying:
'Look, we know they're not all going to work. There's no version of this business that's risk-free. But our job is to step up, make bets and own it when it doesn't work.'
Wait—Isn’t Warner Bros. Changing Hands?
Oh, here’s a wrinkle: Warner Bros. is currently in the process of merging with Paramount Skydance. There’s no telling yet how much that’ll mess with production schedules or push release dates around. If the deal goes through, expect some kind of ripple effect—because these corporate marriages never go exactly according to plan.
So, to sum up: 'Gladys' is headed our way in fall 2028, tying itself to a horror universe that technically hasn’t even kicked off yet. Whether this is smart, desperate, or both, time (and probably some test screenings) will decide. Stay tuned for more as WB’s house continues to get shuffled around.
