Kit Harington says the Jon Snow Game of Thrones spin-off is on ice for now — but not dead. The actor hinted the team’s still circling the idea, so a return to the North isn’t off the table.

If, like me, you’ve occasionally wondered what Jon Snow is up to these days (beyond sulking in the snow and looking perpetually mournful), you’re not alone. That rumoured Game of Thrones spin-off focused on Kit Harington’s brooding Night’s Watch commander has been knocking about the TV news cycle for ages – but now we’ve finally got a proper update. Spoiler: it’s probably not what you want to hear.

Jon Snow Spin-Off: Where Things Stand

For a while, there was a real buzz that HBO would push ahead with a post-Game of Thrones series following Jon Snow, with Kit Harington heavily involved. Early reports suggested talks were happening, scripts might be brewing, and the piles of fur pelts were being dusted off.

Well, according to Harington himself – who turned up at Motor City Comic Con and had a chat with GamesRadar – the whole thing was quietly shelved over two years ago. That was before House of the Dragon even hatched.

Why? Here’s what Kit said, cutting through all the PR fluff:

'My main thing is not wanting to go there and sort of do an injustice by the character. I think he ended well. I think that he went where he was meant to. So, if you pick him up again, it needs to be for the right reasons.'

So basically, Kit felt Jon Snow had a decent send-off at the end of Thrones (an opinion not shared by everyone, let’s be honest), and wasn’t going to drag him back just for the sake of content. Fair play.

What Could Have Been

It’s not as if he didn’t fancy the idea at all, though. Kit reckons there was 'something left to say' about Snow, especially with a series centred on him alone – which is actually a different beast from Thrones, where Jon was always part of a gigantic ensemble.

But—crucially—nobody managed to strike gold with a story worth telling. Harington says they 'couldn’t find the right thing', so the team just quietly put the project on ice. You wouldn’t call it a dramatic cancellation so much as shrugging and moving on.

If you’re hoping that means 'never', well, not quite. There’s always the chance someone comes up with the right pitch. Rumour mill says HBO is open to it, if the stars (and scripts) align. But if it ever does happen, there’s no George R. R. Martin book to base it on—so they’d be winging it in totally new territory. If you thought the Thrones ending was divisive, just imagine the forums with this.

Meanwhile, in Westeros…

  • House of the Dragon – Already making a lot of noise, with more seasons in the works.
  • A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – That one’s next up to bat after House of the Dragon wraps its current season.
  • Jon Snow spin-off – Officially: not dead, but definitely hibernating, and maybe for good.

So there you have it—the Jon Snow show might pop up one day, but for now, HBO is focused on Targaryens, dragons, and other less sulky corners of Westeros.
