Friday the 13th Prequel Crystal Lake Stalks Onto Peacock This October
A24’s Crystal Lake premieres on Peacock Oct. 15, 2026, with an eight-episode run.
If you grew up watching hockey-masked maniacs terrorize campers, you’ve been waiting a while. Seventeen years, to be exact. That’s how long it’s been since the last 'Friday the 13th' flick lumbered into theaters. What’s wild is, that’s the longest gap this infamous slasher franchise has ever taken. But after all that radio silence, it’s finally coming back—just not as a movie, and not in the way you might expect.
Jason's Back… Kind Of
A24 (yes, the 'elevated horror' people) are bringing 'Friday the 13th' to TV, with a prequel series called 'Crystal Lake.' So, instead of Jason smashing through doors with a machete, we’re getting a deeper dive into what went down before the original body count started. The series is set to hit Peacock on Thursday, October 15, 2026. That’s two weeks ahead of Halloween—perfect timing, honestly, even if it’s not on an actual Friday the 13th. Guess you can’t have everything.
Who's Who in 'Crystal Lake'
This show isn’t holding back on big names for its leads:
- Linda Cardellini ('Dead to Me') is taking on Pamela Voorhees—the original killer mom you can thank for Jason’s ongoing family issues.
- Callum Vinson (from 'Chucky') plays young Jason Voorhees, which is about as tragic as child roles get.
The casting was announced alongside the debut date during NBC’s upfronts, if you’re the sort of person who tracks network scheduling drama.
The Franchise Backstory
If you need a refresher: the 'Friday the 13th' movies go back to 1980 and span twelve films of pure, unfiltered slasher chaos. But here’s the twist a lot of people forget: Jason wasn’t the original killer. The very first movie revealed it was Pamela Voorhees (originally Betsy Palmer) getting revenge on the camp counselors for letting her son drown. So, even though Pamela only guest-starred as an unstoppable force in one film, she’s always been the emotional core (and mysterious shadow) over the whole franchise.
A Bumpy Road to Crystal Lake
'Crystal Lake' had a seriously messy journey getting made. Back in 2022, the show was announced with Bryan Fuller ('Hannibal') as showrunner, which had horror fans pretty hyped. Then, some drama: in May 2024, Fuller got the boot, with A24 hitting the reset button on the creative direction. Enter Brad Caleb Kane—whose big credit is co-showrunning 'It: Welcome to Derry'—brought on to take the wheel. If you’re keeping score, the new A24 vision finally got cameras rolling from June to October 2025.
Fitting the Halloween Vibe
The release date makes sense—just in time to haunt your October binge list. The timing is no accident. With similar horror TV (like 'It: Welcome to Derry') pulling strong numbers right before Halloween on HBO, Peacock no doubt wants a piece of the spooky season action. There’s no official confirmation yet on episode rollout, but if Peacock repeats its usual pattern (think 'The Paper' or 'Ted'), we’ll probably get all eight episodes in one chunk.
‘Seventeen years is a seriously long time for a legendary horror villain to take a nap. Looks like Jason—and Pamela—are finally ready to wake up and make us think twice about summer camp again.’
