Mr. & Mrs. Smith is multiplying the mayhem in season 2, adding Francesca Scorsese as one of the multiple Mrs. Smiths on deck. The identity-blurring spy caper just found a fresh face for its twisty new run.

Right, so if you thought the new Mr. & Mrs. Smith series on Prime Video was going to quietly mimic the Brad Pitt–Angelina Jolie romp and then shuffle off, think again. The spy caper has not only been renewed for another round, but the folks behind it are shaking up the format—and frankly, the whole thing is turning into a bit of a casting carousel.

So, Who's Actually Sticking Around?

When season two got the green light, the word was that Donald Glover and Maya Erskine (our original John and Jane Smiths) probably wouldn't be coming back. Instead, we were apparently getting a shiny new couple taking up the Smith mantle with every season—a bit like Doctor Who, if the Doctor was contractually obliged to do couples therapy with a silencer under the pillow.

However, plot twist: Glover and Erskine are returning in some capacity—just don't expect it to be all them, all the time. Glover is, helpfully, pulling double duty both in front of and behind the camera, directing several episodes again this season. (He was the one who helmed that wild, ambiguous shootout cliffhanger at the end of series one, by the way.)

The New Lot: Meet Your Fresh Mr. & Mrs. Smiths

Now, the real eyebrow-raiser: Francesca Scorsese—yes, daughter of that Scorsese—is on board as one of the new Mrs. Smiths. She's previously turned up in We Are Who We Are and will be sharing the ‘Smith’ alias with Talia Ryder (Never Rarely Sometimes Always). On the ‘Mr’ side of the equation, Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora) joins in. In case you're keeping score, Ryder actually replaces Sophie Thatcher, who was initially cast but then swapped out after the show hit a pretty major snag with casting and delayed things for about eight months. Thankfully, with the roster sorted, cameras rolled again from early April.

For Anyone Who Missed Season One:

The series isn't just cashing in on the film's nostalgia. Glover and Francesca Sloane reimagined the concept: two total strangers sign up for some shadowy spy agency and get paired off, living undercover in swanky Manhattan as the archetype married couple, Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Each week, a new mission crops up—as does a new relationship milestone. Unsurprisingly, the thrill of dodgy work and playing house gets messier the more actual feelings enter the equation. By the series end, it wasn't even clear if either of them made it out in one piece after that last shootout—so the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of Glover and Erskine returning should be fun to unravel.

Behind the Scenes: Who's Pulling the Strings?

  • Co-creators: Donald Glover & Francesca Sloane
  • Showrunner, writer, exec producer (season 2): Anna Ouyang Moench
  • Returning exec producers: Yariv Milchan, Michael Schaefer, Stephen Glover, Anthony Katagas, Fam Udeorji
  • Maya Erskine joins as executive producer too, so she's well and truly in the mix

So, What Now?

If you're collecting celebrity offspring, Francesca Scorsese's casting alone is probably enough reason to tune back in. Personally, I'm just hoping they keep leaning into the blend of domestic bickering and bullets—because honestly, when was the last time Bond had to fake-smile through an in-laws dinner and a rooftop gunfight in the same hour?

Season two is officially in production, and with all these Smiths running about, it does look like the show's determined not to play it safe. As for whether espionage or relationships are deadlier—well, the jury is still out.

'We're getting more Smiths, some fresh faces, and apparently, Glover behind the lens again. If nothing else, at least there'll be no shortage of marital mayhem.'
