Forget The Madison: Yellowstone's Real Spinoff Is Finally Coming

Once meant to extend Yellowstone, The Madison now rides solo — and a bona fide spinoff is finally on the horizon.

Apparently, Paramount has decided that if you like Taylor Sheridan shows, you probably want two of them at once—whether or not that makes any sense. Right now, 'The Madison' and 'Marshals' are both streaming, but if you were looking for the next big chapter in the 'Yellowstone' saga, you’re probably more confused than satisfied. Let’s talk through what’s happened here, because the Sheridan-verse release strategy is, to put it politely, a little head-scratching.

Backstory: Sheridan Overload, But No Clear 'Yellowstone' Successor

When everyone heard Paramount had greenlit a batch of new Taylor Sheridan shows, most of us figured we’d be getting at least one real-deal 'Yellowstone' sequel. You know, a true Season 6 in disguise. But that is not how things have played out. So why all the weirdness?

'The Madison': Hype, Switch—and a Spin-off That Isn’t

'The Madison' was originally supposed to be part of the 'Yellowstone' universe, even if it didn’t have the Duttons front and center. Think 'Landman', but, well, with a different ranch. Somewhere along the production line, though, Paramount pivoted—hard. Now it’s a standalone show starring Michelle Pfeiffer (no complaints there), but it’s not technically connected to 'Yellowstone' anymore. If you’re a completionist, that’s not great news.

So, why’d they bail on the spin-off route? No official answer, but logic says Sheridan or someone in the boardroom thought maybe stringing together endless Dutton-adjacent stories wasn’t the best idea—especially after Kevin Costner walked away from his John Dutton duties. That caused a scramble to find a new lead. At one point, the plan was a series known as '2024'—in the same mold as the other numeric prequels (1883, 1923, 1944, etc.), potentially starring Matthew McConaughey. That fell through, so now we just have a new Montana-set show… minus any Duttons.

OG fans can be forgiven for feeling a little shortchanged. It gets even weirder.

'Marshals': The Most Generic 'Yellowstone' Spin-Off Possible

'Marshals' takes the opposite approach: it’s technically still part of the Yellowstone DNA, featuring Kayce Dutton in the leading role. But honestly, aside from the familiar face, it’s basically just another cop show. Think 'Walker', but in Montana. Any hope for more Dutton drama? Not so fast. The pilot straight-up kills off Monica Dutton, so the happy family ending that 'Yellowstone' spent seasons building up is done in Episode 1. Ouch.

On paper, it’s a spin-off. In spirit, it feels more like a re-use of the IP. So, again, the actual continuation that fans have been waiting for isn’t here… yet.

Why Did Paramount Dump 'The Madison' All At Once?

Here’s another choice that makes zero sense to me: Paramount dropped all six episodes of 'The Madison' across just two weekends. Six episodes, then done. That’s barely enough for viewers to get invested or talk about it, and then—poof—it’s over. Also, the show’s already been renewed for Season 2. Somehow, 'Landman' had to earn its next round, but this one got instant approval. Make of that what you will.

"The trees and rivers look so beautiful, you’d think you were watching Planet Earth."

I’ve only seen the premiere, but the style (big drama, gorgeous shots of the Montana wilderness, even some fish action) absolutely screams 'Yellowstone'. If they’d kept the spin-off connection, it might have been just what fans wanted. Instead, we get a visually impressive but totally standalone series—and that’s just… odd.

The Real Sequel: 'Dutton Ranch' Is on the Horizon

So, is anyone actually doing a proper 'Yellowstone' follow-up? Luckily, yes. There’s a show coming—working title is 'Dutton Ranch'—that will directly continue the saga we care about. Beth Dutton (Kelly Reilly) and Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) are the main focus this time, presumably starting fresh on new land in Dillon, Montana. If you loved the Beth and Rip dynamic, this is the series you should be excited for. Sheridan chose to spin off their story as its own thing, instead of just wedging them into a hypothetical Season 6, which seems like a smart call.

  • Premise: Follows Beth and Rip building a new cattle ranch after Beth snaps up some property at the tail end of 'Yellowstone'.
  • New Setting: Dillon, Montana (so yes, expect new rivals and, probably, a fresh batch of family drama).
  • Vibe Check: All signs point to the same epic, slightly soap-y energy as the original—just no John Dutton this time.
  • Release Date: Paramount is aiming for late 2026. So yes, patience required.

Casting confirmations are still coming together, but you can safely bet on Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser returning for more Beth and Rip chemistry (which, let's face it, is pretty much the beating heart of the franchise).

So, until that one arrives, you’ll find me scratching my head over these quick-burn non-spin-offs, and waiting for the actual next thing in the 'Yellowstone' world. Let’s hope Paramount gets the message this time.
