Fan-Favorite Horror Director Said No To Scary Movie 6 Role
Scary Movie 6 almost landed a meta shocker: a fan-favorite horror director was lined up for a surprise cameo but passed at the last minute.
So, Scary Movie 6 has finally landed in cinemas, keeping that two-decade-long run of horror piss-takes going. But here is a bit of trivia for you: there was almost an extra layer of horror royalty in the cast this time round. Honestly, if you are into the genre you will probably raise an eyebrow at who they tried (and failed) to rope in.
Jordan Peele: The Cameo that Wasn’t
Marlon Wayans, who you will recognise as the lead in this merry parade of horror spoofing, spilled to The Hollywood Reporter that he personally tried to get Jordan Peele—that’s right, the mind behind Get Out and Nope—to jump on board. Apparently, Marlon let Peele know that Scary Movie 6 would be sending up Get Out, to which Peele played it cool, at first. Wayans’ version goes something like this:
'I was like, "You want to be in it?" He said, "Nah." I was like, "Alright, not that cool,"’
So, no Jordan Peele cameo. Can not really blame him, but for fans, that could have been absolute cinema gold—imagine him joining in to poke fun at his own material. Even so, the Get Out parody stayed in, complete with a send-up of that “Sunken Place” scene—now practically horror meme royalty. If you have seen the trailer, you have probably clocked the reference.
What’s Getting Skewered This Time?
- Get Out (obviously, and still without Peele)
- Weapons
- Sinners
- M3GAN
- Scream
- And the list carries on—if you have seen anything horror and remotely new, odds are it gets lampooned in here
But the sixth Scary Movie actually does not stop at horror, which is sort of bold (or bizarre, depending on your view). Earlier this year in April, the crew even did extra shoots to send up the Michael Jackson biopic (that one starring Jaafar Jackson, if you missed the casting news). Kind of wild, spoofing other films while they are still fresh out of the gate—or still in the gate, sometimes. The director, Michael Tiddes, has called it something of a live parody: 'I believe that we’re the first movie to parody films while the films were coming out, like we were doing it live.'
Returning cast this time includes not just Marlon Wayans, but also Shawn Wayans, Jon Abrahams, and Dave Sheridan, for anyone still keeping count of the Wayans family reunion tally. The pile-on of cameos and legacy faces seems to be par for the course by now.
By the way, Marlon Wayans is already stoking hype for Scary Movie 7. He’s promised it’ll take on 'Backrooms' and 'Obsession' among other trending horror bits. Apparently, this franchise does not believe in calling time.
