Fallout’s second season brings a life-sized Deathclaw to the screen, relying on puppetry rather than digital effects to create a more tangible menace.

Season two of Fallout is set to introduce a host of new dangers to the wasteland, but none are likely to be as intimidating as the Deathclaw. This towering, horned creature has long been a source of dread for players of the game, and now television audiences are about to experience its terror first-hand.

What may surprise dedicated fans is the approach taken to bring this monstrous figure to life. Rather than relying on digital trickery, the production team has opted for a more hands-on method. Walton Goggins, who portrays the Ghoul, shared his initial disbelief when he first saw Howard Cummings’ early designs for the beast. However, the final result—a massive puppet—proved far more convincing.

‘Thankfully, I didn’t have to look up into the rafters of a stage and imagine this, because we have puppeteers,’

Goggins explained.

‘It’s not a green screen; there are puppeteers manning this thing. It’s cumbersome and it’s weird, but they’re doing the work to intimidate us. It’s incredible.’

Crafting a Tangible Threat

This commitment to physical effects is hardly out of character for the series. Fallout has always prided itself on a sense of authenticity, with the first season featuring working Pip-Boys and even in-universe documents scattered about the set for added realism. The decision to use a practical Deathclaw continues this tradition, offering actors something real to react to and viewers a more immersive experience.

So far, only brief glimpses of the creature have been revealed, most notably in the latest trailer for the upcoming season. For those who recall the perilous quarries of New Vegas, the sight of a Deathclaw may be all too familiar. Yet, the anticipation of seeing this iconic foe realised through practical effects is palpable.

Anticipation Builds for the Next Chapter

The new season is scheduled to arrive on Prime Video on 17 December. As the release date approaches, excitement continues to mount over how the show will handle its most formidable adversary yet. The use of puppetry over computer-generated imagery is a bold move, promising a more grounded and tactile sense of danger.

For those eager to see what else the series has in store, there’s plenty to look forward to. Fallout’s blend of dark humour, post-apocalyptic drama, and now, a properly menacing Deathclaw, is set to make for compelling viewing.
