Discover the latest Game of Thrones films and series set for release in 2026, including prequels, sequels, and animated projects. Find out what's confirmed, what's in development, and what's been cancelled.

While the original Game of Thrones series has drawn to a close, the world of Westeros is far from finished. A host of new films and television programmes are on the horizon, each promising to expand George R.R. Martin’s intricate universe. With seven projects currently in various stages of development, fans have plenty to look forward to, from fresh prequels to animated adventures. Here’s a comprehensive look at what’s coming, what’s in the works, and which spin-offs have been shelved.

Confirmed Releases: What’s Next for Westeros

The much-anticipated A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is set to premiere on 18 January 2026. This prequel, adapted from Martin’s novella ‘The Hedge Knight’, follows Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell) as they navigate a realm still very much under Targaryen rule. The series, written and executive produced by Martin alongside Ira Parker, takes place a century after the events of House of the Dragon, ensuring the Targaryen legacy remains at the forefront.

Meanwhile, House of the Dragon returns for its third series in summer 2026. The new episodes promise to open with the dramatic Battle of the Gullet, as described in ‘Fire & Blood’. With filming wrapped and a fourth series already approved, the Targaryen saga shows no sign of slowing down.

Projects in Development: New Stories and Animated Ventures

Several other projects are in development, though their release dates remain unconfirmed. Aegon’s Conquest, penned by Mattson Tomlin, is set to explore the earliest days of the Targaryen dynasty, chronicling Aegon’s campaign to unite Westeros. Details are scarce, but the series would serve as a prelude to all existing stories.

The Sea Snake, also known as Nine Voyages, will chart the exploits of Corlys Velaryon, first introduced in House of the Dragon. Originally planned as live-action, the project has shifted to animation due to budgetary concerns.

‘Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.’

The fate of the other two animated series is less clear, though one is believed to be The Golden Empire, set in the distant land of Yi Ti.

Further Spin-Offs and the Elusive Film

Ten Thousand Ships will recount the journey of Nymeria, the legendary Rhoynar queen who settled in Dorne. Although Brian Helgeland’s initial script was not picked up, Eboni Booth is now developing a new pilot.

‘She’s an amazingly talented young playwright, and a joy to work with; when not writing and producing her prize-winning plays on- and off-Broadway, she has been kept busy by me and HBO, working on a new pilot for TEN THOUSAND SHIPS, a GAME OF THRONES spinoff about Nymeria and the Rhoynar. We’re all very excited about this one… though we’re still trying to figure out how we’re going to pay for ten thousand ships, three hundred dragons, and those giant turtles,’

Martin commented.

There is also talk of a feature film set in Martin’s universe. As of October 2024, Warner Bros. is quietly developing a project, though it remains in the earliest stages with no creative team attached. Whether this will adapt existing material or chart new territory is yet to be seen.

Cancelled Projects: What Might Have Been

Not every idea has made it to screen. Several spin-offs have been announced and subsequently cancelled, including Flea Bottom, Empire of Ash (also known as a Doom of Valyria spin-off), Bloodmoon, and Snow. These projects, for now, remain part of the franchise’s long list of unrealised ambitions.

For those seeking more fantasy, there’s always The Rings of Power’s third series or a browse through the best of HBO Max’s current offerings.
