Elon Musk Slams The Odyssey Casting, Takes Aim at Christopher Nolan
Elon Musk is back to bashing Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, blasting the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and doubling down on his criticism of the director.
So Christopher Nolan's big adaptation of The Odyssey hasn't even hit theaters yet, but it's already basically a lightning rod for internet outrage. And a lot of the drama? You're not going to be shocked to hear it has Elon Musk's fingerprints all over it.
Elon Musk: Still Mad Online (Now About Casting)
In case you missed it, Nolan's The Odyssey features an absolutely stacked cast—Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Anne Hathaway, and, more to the point, Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy. It's that last bit that's got Musk in a mood.
Musk has been lighting up X (formerly Twitter) with his complaints about Nyong'o's casting. If you feel like déjà vu, you're not wrong—he's brought this up before, and he hasn't mellowed out about it. His latest round? Jumping into a thread started by conservative commentator Matt Walsh, who argued it's a double standard for a Black actress to play Helen of Troy when, supposedly, the reverse would never fly in Hollywood.
'Absolutely true. Such hypocrisy in Hollywood.' — Elon Musk, May 13, 2026
For the record, someone tried to argue that the Academy Awards diversity standards forced the casting choice—except that's not really how the Oscar rules work. Sure, diversity is a thing, but it's not just about putting a single non-white actor in a main role; there's a whole list of considerations, including what the movie is actually about.
The Odyssey: Not Exactly a Drama-Free Zone
This isn't the only time the new epic has drawn internet ire. Some diehard fans are apparently up in arms about Agamemnon's matte-black armor, of all things. (Because apparently, the real threat to Greek authenticity is a paint job, not casting.)
Nolan's actually addressed this armor complaint—not that it's stopped the peanut gallery. And as if the Helen casting wasn't enough, there's also a whole side controversy about Travis Scott joining the cast, which Nolan's also had to defend publicly.
The Star-Studded Lineup
For clarity, here's who's actually showing up in this thing:
- Matt Damon
- Tom Holland
- Robert Pattinson
- Anne Hathaway
- Mia Goth
- Benny Safdie
- Jon Bernthal
- Lupita Nyong'o
- Charlize Theron
- Elliot Page
- Himesh Patel
- Bill Irwin
- Samantha Morton
- Jesse Garcia
- Will Yun Lee
- Corey Hawkins
- Josh Stewart
- Jimmy Gonzales
- Maurice Compte
- And honestly, probably more—it's one of those ensembles where you actually lose track
In short: high drama on screen, extra drama off it, and we haven't even had a trailer yet. For the record, The Odyssey is set for a July 17, 2026 release in theaters.
If you're here for the actual movie (as opposed to the outrage sports), save the date.
