Dwayne Johnson Recalls Brendan Fraser’s Pivotal Support in The Mummy
Dwayne Johnson reflects on his first acting role in The Mummy Returns and the crucial encouragement he received from Brendan Fraser. Discover how Fraser’s generosity shaped the careers of several Hollywood stars.
Back in 2001, Dwayne Johnson made his first foray into the world of cinema with a role in The Mummy Returns. Brendan Fraser, already established as Rick O’Connell, led the cast alongside Rachel Weisz. The film not only became a box office success but also marked a turning point for Johnson, who was then best known for his wrestling persona, The Rock.
During a recent conversation for Variety’s Actors on Actors, Johnson and Fraser reunited to reminisce about their early days in the industry. Johnson expressed his gratitude for Fraser’s warm welcome at a time when his own acting credentials were, to put it mildly, untested.
You and I first connected on “The Mummy Returns.” That was one of the biggest franchises in the world at that time. I was ready to make my transition into Hollywood. And there was a moment where you could have said, ‘This guy, Dwayne Johnson, he’s never acted before; he’s in pro wrestling.’
He went on to add,
The word I got back was, ‘Brendan loves the idea. He welcomed you with open arms.’ It meant something to me, because you took a risk on me, and years later, you and I are sitting here. I want to thank you for really changing my life.
Fraser’s Influence on Rising Stars
Fraser, for his part, was enthusiastic about Johnson taking on the role of the Scorpion King, confident that he would do it justice. Yet, Johnson is far from the only actor to have benefited from Fraser’s support, whether directly or indirectly, over the years.
Throughout his career, Fraser has been something of a catalyst for others’ success. In 1992, he starred in School Ties, a film that also featured Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, and Chris O’Donnell—none of whom had yet achieved household-name status. Fraser’s presence helped draw attention to the project, giving his co-stars a valuable platform early in their careers.
Two years later, Fraser appeared in Airheads alongside Adam Sandler and Steve Buscemi, both of whom were still on the rise. The film’s popularity, bolstered by Fraser’s involvement, helped showcase the talents of his fellow cast members to a wider audience.
Speculation Over The Mummy 4 Reunion
Recently, it was announced that Fraser and Weisz are set to reprise their roles in a forthcoming fourth instalment of The Mummy franchise. This new chapter is expected to sidestep the events of The Mummy 3: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, as well as the more recent reboot, positioning itself as a legacy sequel.
Given the renewed camaraderie between Fraser and Johnson, and Johnson’s public appreciation for Fraser’s early support, speculation has naturally arisen regarding a possible return for Johnson’s character. While the Scorpion King’s storyline was seemingly wrapped up in The Mummy Returns, a compelling script could always provide a way back. For now, there is no official word on whether Johnson will rejoin the cast, but fans remain hopeful.
