Chris Evans has teased Steve Rogers’ post-Endgame life, with the 45-year-old set to reprise the role in Avengers: Doomsday after around eight years.

Right, MCU fans — after nearly a decade out of the action, Chris Evans is officially back as Steve Rogers in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Naturally, everyone wants to know: What on earth has Cap been up to since handing over the shield at the end of Endgame?

Evans Lifts the Lid

Evans, now 45, has been dodging MCU questions for years. But in a fresh chat on Good Morning America at D23, he finally came out with it: Steve’s been trying to carve out the “ordinary life” he’s always pined for. The man deserves a nap, to be fair. Marvel, though, hasn’t exactly left him alone during his so-called retirement. Over the past eight years, they’ve sent more than a dozen pitches his way — some of them, oddly enough, about Rogers taking on the mantle of Nomad. Evans, for his part, wasn’t keen to undermine the character’s emotional swan song. He turned the lot down.

Evans explained during the D23 interview, "He's doing his best to pursue the life he's always wanted."

But then came the clincher: Robert Downey Jr. agreeing to return to the MCU. Once that domino fell, director Joe Russo got in touch with a new story idea, and suddenly Evans was game. For those who remember Evans’ noncommittal attitude in earlier interviews — his usual ‘never say never’ — that all finally tipped when the story felt right and, obviously, the Downey effect did its work.

Eight Years Away

Here’s the rundown if you’ve lost track: Evans first donned the star-spangled spandex back in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, following up with appearances in The Winter Soldier, Civil War, and all the big Avengers team-ups, including Infinity War and Endgame. His last proper run as Cap was 2019. In between then and now, the only sliver we saw of him in the MCU was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine — though that was a universe-hopping nod to his old Human Torch days, nothing more.

Avengers: Doomsday lands in UK cinemas on 18 December 2026.

The new film, Doomsday, isn’t sticking to just one slice of the multiverse, either. Marvel’s confirmed Evans is returning as Steve Rogers, while Anthony Mackie is still on deck as Earth-616’s Captain America. So yes, we’re getting the “Cap meets Cap” routine at last.
