Andrew Garfield isn’t keeping score in the Spider-Man stakes — in an AP News sit-down, the former web-slinger bigged up Tom Holland’s take.

Let's settle one thing straight off—there's no Spider-Man rivalry, at least not if you ask Andrew Garfield. The ex-web-slinger has made it crystal clear he's got nothing but admiration for the current man in the mask, Tom Holland. The two might be forever linked by spandex and skyscrapers, but Garfield's not having any talk of competition.

Here's what Garfield actually said to AP, after he was asked about Holland taking over: "I think it is the most important thing: how passionate he is about it, how much he cares about the fans, and how good he is as an actor. He's an incredible actor. I'm very excited to watch him do all of his other projects as well, but I'm very, very happy that he's the Spider-Man right now."

That sort of warmth isn't a common thing in Hollywood, especially with these massive roles where egos can get a bit, shall we say, expanded. Garfield went as far as describing Holland as simply "great" and announced, "Couldn't be anyone better." None of that territorial stuff, just a thumbs-up from your friendly, slightly older neighbourhood Spider-Man.

Spider-Man by the Numbers

  • Tobey Maguire kicked things off with three films between 2002–2007. His first outing raked in about $805 million, the sequel hit $789 million, and Spider-Man 3 topped it all with $885 million. IMDb scores? 7.4, 7.5, and 6.3 respectively.
  • Andrew Garfield took over after that, starring in two Amazing Spider-Man films. The first grabbed $757 million (IMDb 7.0); the second, $709 million (IMDb 6.6). There was all sorts of chatter about a third, but that vanished into the ether.
  • Now we've got Tom Holland, who's already starred in four full films. Homecoming made around $881 million (IMDb 7.4), then Far From Home smashed $1.13 billion (IMDb 7.3). Along came No Way Home with a frankly ridiculous $1.92 billion take (IMDb 8.1), and the most recent, Brand New Day, is now sitting above $2 billion with an IMDb rating of 8.2.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the highest-earning Spider-film ever, passing $2 billion at the global box office.

So if you ever wondered whether passing the Spider-baton caused any bitterness, at least for Garfield, it's all water under the bridge. The bigger fuss, apparently, is still about Brits playing Peter Parker.
