Hoping for good news? Pluribus season 2’s latest update won’t help
Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan has dampened hopes for Pluribus Season 2, warning the wait’s longer than fans bargained for — and he’s spelled out the reason.
If you were hoping for a quick follow-up to Pluribus, you're in for a wait—and not the typical "just another year" business, either. Vince Gilligan (the one behind Breaking Bad, so he knows about taking time with a series) has been honest about it: Season 2 is going to take ages, and that's not him being coy.
Why is Pluribus Season 2 taking forever?
So, here's the latest: Gilligan was cornered for some answers at Televerse and gave Decider the rundown. The delay isn't some marketing masterplan nor a way to torment the show's die-hard crowd. It's simply a case of a massive, logistically bonkers production getting bogged down by its own ambition. He says the creative team have sorted the storyline, but they're still deep in the scripting weeds, and not a single camera has rolled for the new episodes yet.
What really complicates things is the show's global scope. Pluribus is all about a worldwide event—so, naturally, the production has to be everywhere as well. Gilligan puts it plainly: the crew has to criss-cross the planet for all those location shoots. Which, yeah, sounds brilliant on paper, but it's an organisational nightmare when you actually try to schedule, budget, and staff the thing.
Speaking with Decider at Televerse, Gilligan laid it out: "It's going to be a long time. It's going to be a while. That is not on purpose. That is not to make the fans frustrated with us."
And then you've got the visual effects. Usually, the post-production crew can knock out the CG in a few months. But with Pluribus, nearly every single shot needs some digital wizardry: removing stray cars, erasing bystanders—anything in the frame that blows the illusion of a world that's supposed to be deserted. It's one of those weird, behind-the-curtain issues you only realise once you're stuck with it. Gilligan actually described it as a never-ending battle against background extras and parked vehicles. It sounds oddly tedious for such an epic show.
How long will the wait be?
Now, if you want to put numbers on it, here's where it gets properly grim for eager fans. Apple TV didn't just order a second season when greenlighting Pluribus—they made a public show of confidence after the first run. But even so, the estimate for Season 2 is somewhere in the late 2028 zone, and that's being generous at this rate.
At one point, Gilligan let slip a personal touch: his mum constantly ribs him about never living to see the next series. His retort: "Mom, we're working as fast as we can," followed by a plea to viewers—"please bear with us. Don't hold your breath; it's going to be a while."
To be fair, Pluribus does have a lot to live up to. The first season wasn't just some cult hit; it picked up 18 Primetime Emmy nominations and has a 99% score on Rotten Tomatoes. No surprise everyone's hungry for more. Just don't expect it to arrive any time soon.
