Under fire as deadlines slip, he insists the production delays aren’t on him.

Eleven years, folks. That's how long it’s been since we last saw the gang from Greendale: Winger’s sarcasm, Abed referencing every movie ever made, Troy doing, well, Troy things, Shirley’s surprisingly deep wisdom, Annie keeping everyone mostly on track, Britta being Britta—the whole chaotic crew. Over six seasons, Community became a cult classic, packed with celebrity cameos and plenty of oddball energy. But for almost as long as there have been cool, cool, cool jokes, there’s been talk of that mythical Community movie. And yet, after a decade of rumors and teases, we’ve got… still no movie.

So… Is This Ever Actually Happening?

Let’s rewind a bit: Peacock gave the movie the greenlight back in 2022. It sounded like the stars would finally align once the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes ended. Nope. Production keeps slipping down the calendar, becoming another classic case of 'soon' that never arrives.

Some folks tried pointing the finger at Donald Glover, whose post-Community career is, well, let’s just say the guy’s not exactly sitting around bored. But Glover just told Entertainment Tonight that he’s not the roadblock. In fact, he claims the core cast is still in active talks:

'We’re working on it right now. I know everybody’s been saying that for forever, but, I swear to you, I’m not lying about this. I really think it’s something that’s going to happen soon.'

He also tossed in that the gang is still texting about it. So at least they haven’t forgotten their study group roots.

Bittersweet Nostalgia and Those Legendary Guest Stars

Ken Jeong (aka Señor Chang, aka Ben Chang, aka half a dozen personas) says he’s read the script, and it got him right in the feels: reading it brought everything back. This checks out if you ever watched any behind-the-scenes extras: it’s clear these folks genuinely enjoyed working together—even if that chemistry wasn’t always 100% sunshine and rainbows.

Not-So-Harmonious History

While the Community cast mostly got along, the later seasons weren’t exactly without drama. The biggest flashpoint: Chevy Chase’s infamous split from the show. There were plenty of tabloid headlines about on-set conflicts and, more seriously, accusations of racism. In I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, Chevy weighs in himself, saying:

'I’m not racist,' and that any offensive lines were meant to show his character’s increasing awfulness or were basically venting in the heat of the moment.

Believe who you want, but that messy backstory is still a footnote on the push to get the movie made.

Should We Stay Tuned?

The cast (minus the major headache, Chevy) seem amped to come back. Peacock’s committed, and the fans—judging by the endless memes and rewatches—are clearly still here for Greendale’s signature self-aware absurdity. If you’re feeling nostalgic (or just want to see if the paintball episodes still hold up), Community is streaming right now on Disney+, Hulu, and Peacock.

  • Peacock greenlit a Community movie in 2022
  • 2023 labor strikes delayed any production progress
  • Donald Glover insists it’s not his schedule holding things up
  • The core cast is still communicating and expressing excitement
  • Ken Jeong has read the movie script and approves
  • Chevy Chase departed in controversy (claims of racism, drama); he denies the accusations
  • No official filming start date yet—just more promises it’s 'happening soon'
  • All six seasons of Community are available to stream on Disney+, Hulu, and Peacock

Until we have something more concrete than hopeful texts and group chats, the Community movie is Schrödinger’s sequel: it both exists and doesn’t, depending on who you ask and how optimistic you’re feeling. But with most of the cast on board and Peacock still holding the torch, this story isn’t over yet—just, as always, to be continued.
