The War Between Land and Sea, a Doctor Who spin-off, made a strong start on BBC One, attracting nearly 3 million UK viewers. Disney Plus subscribers, however, will have to wait longer to watch.

The much-anticipated Doctor Who offshoot, The War Between Land and Sea, has made a notable entrance on BBC One, drawing in close to 3 million viewers for its opening episode on 7 December. This impressive figure came despite stiff competition from the finale of I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, a staple of British reality television. The second episode also performed well, with over 2 million tuning in, surpassing the audience numbers for the first two series of the main programme—excluding the recent festive special, 'Joy to the World'.

Plot and Cast Highlights

Russell T Davies, the creative force behind the project, introduces viewers to Barclay Pierre-Dupont, portrayed by Russell Tovey, a familiar face from Davies' previous works. Barclay, a modest officer, unexpectedly finds himself at the centre of delicate negotiations between UNIT and a newly discovered species, the Homo aqua. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, known for her role in Loki, takes on the part of Salt, the ambassador for the Sea Devils. The supporting cast features Jemma Redgrave, Colin McFarlane, Alexander Devrient, and Ruth Madeley, each bringing depth to the unfolding drama.

Character and Themes

In a recent interview, Tovey reflected on his character's journey:

"I hope that many, many people can see themselves in him and then feel inspired to do something – that they see that every man can be the most important man,"

he remarked.

"Barclay is someone who gets chosen because of kindness, because of showing empathy. He's thrust into this terrifying place, out of his depth, but when he's there, he doesn't choose anger or violence. He's calm and peaceful and shows respect to this lifeform that people are othering. It's such a beautiful message that what he's seen and celebrated for are his sensitivities, for being soft and kind – especially as a man."

International Release and Reception

While UK audiences have already had the chance to watch the new series, viewers abroad, particularly those waiting for its arrival on Disney Plus, will need to be patient. The show's strong start in Britain suggests it could become a significant hit internationally once released. In the meantime, fans of the genre might enjoy revisiting some of the greatest science fiction television series ever made—Doctor Who itself, notably, holds the fourteenth spot on that list.
