Disney just scrapped its plan for Frozen 3 and 4 — here’s what changed
Disney has changed tack on Frozen 3 and Frozen 4, stepping back from a quick-succession release — and there’s a clear creative reason for the slowdown.
Good news (or bad, if you were hoping for a conveyor belt of sequels): Disney is switching up its original gameplan for Frozen 3 and the inevitably titled Frozen 4. Rather than firing out two films in quick succession, they're now pushing for each one to stand on its own, giving the animators, writers, and songwriters extra breathing room. If you've got sequel fatigue, you'll probably appreciate this move. If not, well, settle in, because it's going to be a longer wait between visits to Arendelle.
Behind the change
Top story here: Jared Bush, creative chief over at Walt Disney Animation Studios, recently chatted to Collider during the SCAD Savannah Film Festival and gave the lowdown. He admitted that the company did, at first, want both films to come out fairly close together. The idea was a one-two punch: get both films done, ship them out, keep the hype rolling (and the merch sales humming along, obviously). But now? Not happening. The plan's gone in the bin.
Bush pointed out that when trying to figure out Frozen 3 and what the fourth would look like, putting them back-to-back sounded good in theory but didn't work in practice. Here's how he summed up the rethink while speaking to Collider:
Looking at Frozen 3 and what a Frozen 4 could look like, I know early on it was, ‘We’re going to put them right together, and they’re going to be out in the world. It’s going to happen quick.’ That’s not what we’re doing, for a lot of reasons.
The main worry, for Bush? It's about the characters. They want each film to focus squarely on where Elsa, Anna, and the rest are headed emotionally. The actual plot, he reckons, is less important than making sure you're buying the journey. He also made it clear that letting the fourth film dictate everything about the third is a non-starter:
If you’re so rigid on what [Frozen] 4 might look like, then it could stifle you.
In other words, they don't want to hamstring Frozen 3 by turning it into a two-hour prologue for the next instalment. If you're shelling out for a cinema ticket, you deserve a proper story—not just set-up for something years away.
Music headaches and release dates
There's also the not-so-small issue of the music. Bush said the soundtrack challenge now is to serve up something familiar but also properly new. No one wants a pile of retreads, but at the same time, the shift can't be so wild you might as well have walked into a Moana sequel by mistake.
Frozen 3 is being directed by Jennifer Lee and is currently eyeing up 24 November 2027 as its big cinema splash. As for Frozen 4, it's still floating out in the unknown, with not even a rough date in sight.
Frozen 3 releases in UK cinemas on 24 November 2027, with Frozen 4 yet to get a confirmed launch date.
