Horror breakout Obsession could soon spawn a sequel or even an anthology TV spin-off, with director Curry Barker teasing plans to expand the universe despite chatter over a plot hole. The in-theaters chiller starring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette may be just the beginning.

If you thought horror flicks were running out of creepy tricks, think again. Obsession, the supernatural thriller that only just landed in cinemas, might be sticking around for a good while yet—and not just in sequel form. Apparently, the film’s director has lots more up his sleeve, plot holes and all. Let’s get into the details.

Director Eyeing Sequel—and Maybe TV

So, Curry Barker—the chap who’s just made his feature-length debut—reckons there’s life in Obsession beyond its current run. Barker told Total Film that, despite admitting his horror movie is holding onto 'kind of a plot hole', he’s seriously thinking about either a traditional sequel or a spin-off TV series.

To quote Barker on the film’s... flexible logic:

'It’s something I don’t like to think about too much, because it totally doesn’t make sense that there’s a world of people just making wishes. It really doesn’t make any sense at all.'

Hardly a ringing endorsement for his own plot, but you have to love the honesty.

Box Office Numbers to Make You Wishful

Now, you might wonder why Barker’s already plotting the next chapter. Here’s the reason: Obsession has smashed it at the box office. It’s pulled in $16 million during its opening weekend in the States, off what was frankly a shoestring budget of $1 million. If that’s not the sort of return that gets Hollywood execs foaming at the mouth, I don’t know what is.

And audiences are lapping it up too. On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s holding a pretty stunning 95% Tomatometer, with a 94% audience score as well. Not too shabby for a film built around a cursed wishing tree.

Cast, Premise & What Comes Next

  • Cast: The main characters are played by Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette, who both seem to be making the most out of… well, making a lot of dark wishes.
  • Release: Hit US cinemas on 15 May 2026.
  • Plot Snapshot: The official blurb isn’t exactly subtle: 'After breaking the mysterious One Wish Willow to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for but soon discovers that some desires come at a dark, sinister price.'

So yes—consequences and creepy business all round.

Sequel, Anthology, or Both?

Even with the story’s logic hanging on by a thread, Barker isn’t just thinking in one direction. As he told Total Film, he’s got a few other projects in mind, plus ideas for Obsession 2. But what’s really sparking his imagination is, of all things, television:

'What really is exciting to me is maybe an anthology, like a one-hour episode. Each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails. Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and you could invite other filmmakers to kind of give their spin at it. That would be really cool.'

Not a mad idea, to be fair—a cursed wish anthology where every story goes tits up? Could be a lot of fun, assuming they can keep topping the last disaster.

Barker’s Horror CV

Just for context, Barker cut his teeth on the 2024 found-footage horror Milk & Serial, which he just chucked on YouTube for free. Now he’s out here pitching multi-million dollar sequels. It’s a bit of a glow up.

Whichever direction this goes—from more doomed romance and wishes, right down to a TV spin-off—one thing’s clear: logical or not, people are hungry for more.
