Homelander’s god complex just crashed into real-world controversy: days after The Boys Season 5 showed him urged by a ghostly Madelyn Stillwell to be worshiped, Donald Trump shared and deleted an AI image casting himself as Jesus, sparking instant parallels. Now the show’s creator weighs in on whether the episode was a direct echo.

Well, here we go again—the real world managing to one-up even the craziest stuff on TV. If you’re caught up on The Boys Season 5, you probably noticed that recent scene: Homelander gets a pep talk from a deeply warped, angelic hallucination of Madelyn Stillwell, pushing him to basically declare himself the new messiah. Classic The Boys, right? Just as that episode hit screens, Donald Trump decided to post an AI image online (since deleted) that basically dressed him up as Jesus. Timing is everything, and yes, everyone online immediately pointed out how weirdly similar these two moments were.

Coincidence? Yep, Apparently So

Naturally, folks started wondering if the writers had written some kind of satirical hit. But Eric Kripke, the showrunner (and the guy who gave us Supernatural), wants everyone to know: no conspiracy here.

'We wrote this episode two years ago, even before the election,' Kripke told TVLine. Translation: nobody predicted the AI-Jesus-Trump meme blitz.

Kripke explained that Homelander's God complex didn't come out of nowhere. They cooked up the idea as they talked about where Homelander's downward spiral might take him this season—and how far was too far.

He actually thought the god-mode pitch was 'crazy' even for their standards, worrying that the audience might see it as cartoonish or just too much (I mean, this is The Boys, so 'too much' is relative). His concern? Reality keeps dialing it up even further.

'My legitimate concern was that everyone would think Homelander had gone too far and it had gotten cartoonish. But the world keeps out-crazying us.'

In other words, satire shouldn't fall behind the news cycle—but in this case, the world’s doing its best to lap the writers' room. Kripke even joked that it’s 'honestly exhausting,' especially since The Boys keeps getting dragged into real-life politics, whether the team likes it or not.

He mentioned in another interview with Polygon that he flagged the whole 'Homelander as God' thing with the marketing folks just a month ago, warning they might be playing with fire given how 'out there' it was. Even he was anxious that fans or critics would think The Boys had pushed Homelander too far off the rails. Ironically, what they couldn’t see coming was Trump himself making the comparison look pretty tame by real-world standards.

'It’s just really hard to out-satire this world,' Kripke said. And honestly, can you blame him?

What's Next for The Boys?

  • The first three episodes of Season 5 are streaming now on Prime Video.
  • New episodes drop every Wednesday. Mark your calendars—they’ll run through May 20, 2026.
  • If you’re new here, the show is adapted from Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic series. Expect just as much mayhem and irreverence as you’d hope.

Bottom line: if you think The Boys is getting over-the-top with its godlike superhero moments, just remember—sometimes it’s the news cycle doing the heavy lifting. The writers are just trying to keep up.
