Euphoria just lit the fuse on its darkest twist yet: Season 3 Episode 5 leaves Zendaya’s Rue in a life-or-death cliffhanger, hinting the series may have finally killed off a main character.

If you thought 'Euphoria' had reached its peak for jaw-dropping moments, think again. Season 3, Episode 5, just might have delivered the show’s wildest cliffhanger to date—and trust me, that’s saying something for a series that’s basically built on chaos.

That Ending: Rue Buried Alive

Let’s start with the scene everyone’s talking about. The episode wraps up with Rue—yep, Zendaya’s Rue—literally buried up to her neck out on Alamo’s ranch. As if that’s not unsettling enough, Alamo (yes, the polo mallet guy) actually rides right at her, mallet raised, and then... hard cut to black. No answers, just pure dread, and a very open question about whether Rue just met her end.

How Did Rue Even Get Here?

So what actually led up to this backyard-burial nightmare? It’s messy. Alamo starts to get suspicious of Rue after Magick calls her out as a snitch, supposedly tied to Laurie’s operation. Rue had already gotten herself tangled up with the DEA and even tried to pin some cocaine on Magick by hiding it in her locker (not exactly subtle). Things spiral—Alamo’s crew decides to make Rue ‘dig her own grave,’ quite literally, then toss her in it. The location: an isolated field, far from anyone who might help.

Meanwhile, in the Messiest Corners of Euphoria

  • Cassie (Sydney Sweeney) gets pulled into the world of online fame, collaborating with influencer Brondon Fontaine. Maddy hypes up Cassie’s OnlyFans, pushing her into the spotlight with fetish shoots and podcast gigs that go viral. Cassie even scores a spot on 'LA Nights' after dropping a monologue from 'Antony and Cleopatra'—so, you know, some light Shakespeare in between all the Internet hustle.
  • Nate, of course, is still dealing with his own disasters. He squeezes Cassie for cash (we’re talking thousands), supposedly to cover his debts. It doesn’t help; some criminal muscle ends up taking Nate’s pinky and another finger. Yeah—graphic, but classic 'Euphoria' escalation.
  • Rue and Jules share a few playful scenes, but it gets awkward again once Jules’ sugar daddy finds Rue’s clothes at his place. Tension? You bet.

Could Rue Actually Survive?

Here’s where things get a bit less bleak—maybe. Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who plays Alamo, threw out a pretty intriguing hint: Rue might have been spared because Alamo thinks she’s still useful. Apparently, he’s eyeing Maddy’s online business and wants help expanding into the social media world (honestly, even the criminals on this show are becoming influencers). Maddy, for her part, tries to vouch for Rue, telling Alamo: "She’s a little crazy, but she’s got a good heart."

What Happens Next?

The preview for Episode 6? Rue’s nowhere to be seen, so if you were hoping for an immediate answer, well, sorry. As of now, HBO hasn’t said a word about whether Rue makes it out of that grave. The cliffhanger stands, and the next episode should finally reveal whether Zendaya's not-so-smooth criminal makes it through one of the most intense (and honestly, weirdly cinematic) near-death scenes they’ve ever shot.
