Two animated blockbusters, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters, are vying for the Golden Globe for Best Animated Film. But controversy and unexpected bans may tip the scales.

The Golden Globe nominations have set the stage for a fierce contest in the animated film category, with two titles capturing the spotlight: Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle and Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters. Both have secured nods for Best Animated Film, joined by Arco, Little Amelie, Elio, and Zootopia 2. While Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has delighted its established fanbase with striking visuals and heartfelt storytelling, KPop Demon Hunters appears to have a distinct advantage.

Controversy Surrounding KPop Demon Hunters

Netflix’s musical fantasy has become a worldwide sensation, blending K-pop, action, and a cast of lively characters. It has shattered streaming records, becoming the platform’s most-watched film to date and making a significant cultural impression. Despite both films being strong contenders, the sheer popularity of KPop Demon Hunters could well see it clinch the award.

However, the film has not been without its detractors. A primary school in Poole, Lilliput Church of England Infant School, has banned pupils from singing songs from the film, citing concerns about upholding a “Christian ethos.” Some members of the community expressed unease with the film’s demon-related themes, prompting the school to act. Particular objection was raised over lyrics performed by the Saja Boys, a fictional group of five demons, with references to temptation and seduction deemed unsuitable for the school environment.

Community Response and School Policy

In a message to parents, the school requested that children refrain from singing these songs at school, out of respect for those whose beliefs may conflict with the film’s themes. The move has sparked debate among parents, with some describing the ban as “unfair and silly.” Acting Head Teacher Lloyd Allington acknowledged the criticism, noting that several parents had pointed out the positive messages in songs such as “Golden.”

The school clarified that the restriction was intended to respect the diverse beliefs within its community and to encourage pupils to appreciate and support classmates who may hold different values. The row highlights the challenges schools face in balancing inclusivity with sensitivity to religious and cultural perspectives.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’s Awards Ambitions

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has rapidly achieved global acclaim, smashing box office records and redefining expectations for animated features. It now stands as the highest-grossing Japanese film ever and the most successful R-rated animated film to date. This remarkable success has propelled the film into the awards spotlight, earning it a Golden Globe nomination and fuelling hopes for further recognition.

Crunchyroll, the film’s distributor, is now mounting a major campaign to secure additional accolades. President Rahul Purini commented,

It’s important for them to pay attention to and be part of and consider it seriously. But the other thing I will say is, going back to be being in a privileged position, we have some giants that have taken anime to the Oscars that we get to build off of Miyazaki, Makoto Shinkai, with his last movie Suzume.

Mitchel Berger, Executive Vice President of Global Commerce, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that participation in awards conversations elevates the genre and draws attention to the artistry involved in its creation.

With both films making waves for very different reasons, the outcome of the Best Animated Film category at the 2026 Golden Globes remains anyone’s guess. KPop Demon Hunters is currently available to stream on Netflix.
