A landmark IMAX re-release of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle arrives in Japan, offering a unique screen format and expanded scenes. Only two cinemas will host this historic anime event.

Anime enthusiasts in Japan are in for a rare treat as Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle prepares for a return to the big screen, but not quite as audiences remember it. This time, the film is set to make its mark as the first of its kind to be shown exclusively in the 1:43:1 aspect ratio, a move that promises to reveal more than ever before—quite literally.

The official announcement, made via the series’ own website, confirms that the film will be back in cinemas from 6 February. The expanded format isn’t just a technical tweak; it’s designed to stretch the visuals both horizontally and vertically, giving viewers a chance to spot fresh details and experience the story from a new perspective. The creators are touting this as a genuinely different outing, with scenes that have been broadened for the occasion.

Limited Access, Maximum Anticipation

There’s a catch, though. Even if you happen to be in Japan, you’ll need a fair bit of luck—and perhaps a fast train ticket. The IMAX re-release is restricted to just two venues: Grand Cinema Sunshine in Tokyo and Osaka Expo City. That’s it. No nationwide rollout, no streaming alternative, just a pair of screens for the entire country. It’s a move that’s bound to leave many fans scrambling for a seat, and perhaps a little envious of those who manage to secure one.

Despite the limited access, the event is already generating considerable buzz. The expanded format and exclusive nature of the screenings have set expectations high, with some speculating that this could help Infinity Castle close the gap with its predecessor, Mugen Train, which still holds the title of Japan’s highest-grossing domestic film—by a margin of about a billion yen.

What Lies Ahead for Demon Slayer

As for what’s next, the future of the franchise remains tantalisingly open. A sequel to Infinity Castle is on the cards, but fans will need to be patient.

“Well, we’ve announced that it will be a trilogy of movies, but our partners at Aniplex and Ufotable haven’t decided on dates yet,”

Crunchyroll CEO Rahul Parini explained last year.

“But look, there’s definitely urgency for all of us to bring more Demon Slayer to fans as soon as we can – because we know the urgency is there among the fanbase.”

For now, the IMAX event stands as a milestone for anime in cinemas, offering a select few the chance to see Infinity Castle in a way that’s never been possible before. Whether it’s enough to push the film into the record books remains to be seen, but it’s certainly a moment that will have fans talking for some time.
