A familiar Gotham scribe steps in as Warner Bros. quietly reshuffles the creative team behind The Brave and the Bold, with the film’s future direction and release date still shrouded in uncertainty.

Batman’s next big-screen outing under the DCU banner has taken a fresh turn, as the much-discussed The Brave and the Bold edges forward with a new scriptwriter at the helm. Announced back in January 2023 as part of James Gunn’s ambitious “Gods and Monsters” line-up, the project has lingered in development limbo while other titles have either launched or inched closer to production. With Supergirl slated for a 2026 debut and several other projects still circling, The Brave and the Bold has remained a focal point for fans eager to see how the Caped Crusader will be reimagined.

Now, the project appears to have found its footing. Reports indicate that Christina Hodson, whose previous credits include The Flash and Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), is currently penning the script. Neither DC Studios nor Warner Bros. has issued a statement, but it’s understood that the studio is proceeding with caution, with no completed draft expected in the near future. Hodson’s involvement reunites her with director Andy Muschietti, who previously directed The Flash and is set to take the reins on this new Batman venture. Notably, Hodson had previously worked on a script for a Batman Beyond film that, while never produced, was well received within the studio and bolstered her reputation among industry peers.

Behind the Scenes: A Quiet Reshuffle

Hodson’s appointment is not entirely out of the blue. She was part of the writers’ room assembled by Gunn for the DCU’s early planning stages in 2023. However, the timing of her involvement raises eyebrows. In February 2025, Gunn remarked that The Brave and the Bold had a writer, but declined to name them, saying,

“as it puts too much pressure on the guy.”

The use of “guy” suggests Hodson may be the second writer to tackle the project. According to recent reports, she has been working on the script since autumn 2025, implying a change in direction or a previous writer’s departure during that period.

What’s particularly striking is the decision to reunite Muschietti and Hodson after their collaboration on The Flash—a film that struggled both critically and at the box office. While some dismissed Gunn’s praise of The Flash as mere promotional bluster, it seems he genuinely saw potential in the creative partnership. Muschietti’s work on It and its follow-up, Welcome to Derry, has been well regarded, and Hodson’s Birds of Prey is often cited as a standout in the DCEU. Her script for Bumblebee also drew acclaim, marking it as a high point for the Transformers franchise. There’s a sense that, despite past misfires, this pairing could yet deliver something unexpected for Batman’s next chapter.

Patience Required: Release Date and Franchise Strategy

Those hoping for swift updates on The Brave and the Bold may need to temper their expectations. Gunn has already confirmed that Batman will not appear in Man of Tomorrow, and the new film is not expected to reach cinemas before 2028. This deliberate pacing is partly to avoid clashing with Matt Reeves’ The Batman – Part II, which is scheduled for release in October 2027. The studio is keen to keep Reeves’ vision and Gunn’s DCU separate, ensuring that neither creative direction is compromised.

Some fans have speculated about merging Reeves’ crime saga with the broader DCU, but the current leadership appears intent on maintaining distinct universes. This approach allows the new Batman to explore more fantastical elements, while Reeves continues his own, more grounded narrative. For now, the wait continues, with the promise of a fresh take on Gotham’s most famous vigilante still some way off.
