A major development for DC’s next Batman film: the studio has brought in the screenwriter behind The Flash. Find out what this means for the project’s future and why fans are divided.

After a lengthy period of uncertainty, DC’s upcoming Batman project, The Brave and the Bold, appears to have found new momentum. The studio has reportedly secured Christina Hodson, who penned 2023’s The Flash, to take on scriptwriting duties for the much-anticipated film. While DC has yet to make an official statement, the news has already sparked considerable discussion among fans and industry watchers alike.

James Gunn, co-CEO at DC Studios, has made it clear that he wants all DC Universe productions to have completed, compelling scripts before moving forward. Recent remarks from Gunn suggest that The Brave and the Bold will not enter full production until after the release of The Batman: Part Two, scheduled for 2027. This approach is intended to prevent any overlap between the two high-profile projects.

Creative Choices and Industry Reactions

Hodson’s appointment is notable, given her association with The Flash—a film that struggled at the box office and marked the end of a particular era for DC’s cinematic output. The director of The Flash, Andy Muschietti, has already been attached to The Brave and the Bold since shortly after the project was first announced. This pairing signals DC’s willingness to double down on the creative team behind one of its more divisive recent releases.

Some observers remain sceptical about this direction.

I hate to say it, but this has me even more skeptical of the creative team behind the film. Muschietti has managed to pull out some horror hits, but The Flash was frankly dismal. Even its revival of my personal favourite Batman, Michael Keaton, wasn't enough to get me through. That said, Keaton's presence was indeed the best part of a movie where I found myself hunting for scraps to appreciate, and Muschietti's success with the horror genre could indicate that he and Hodson could find better results with a moodier, more Bat-focused film.

The hope, it seems, is that the duo’s experience—particularly Muschietti’s background in horror—might lend itself to a darker, more atmospheric take on Gotham’s vigilante.

Production Timeline and Fan Anticipation

There is, as yet, no confirmed release date for The Brave and the Bold. The project’s timeline is closely tied to the completion of The Batman: Part Two, with DC Studios intent on keeping its major properties from treading on each other’s toes. This measured approach is in line with Gunn’s broader strategy for the DC Universe, which prioritises careful planning over rushed releases.

In the meantime, audiences are left to speculate about what Hodson and Muschietti might bring to the table. The creative pairing has certainly raised eyebrows, given the mixed reception to their previous collaboration. Still, with the promise of a fresh script and a new direction, there’s cautious optimism among some corners of the fanbase.

Looking Ahead

As the wait continues, DC enthusiasts are keeping a close eye on developments. The Brave and the Bold remains one of the most talked-about projects in the studio’s pipeline, and its progress—or lack thereof—will no doubt fuel further debate. For now, the focus shifts to the next wave of DC films and series, as the studio works to redefine its cinematic universe.
