Creator Reveals the Real Reason Soldier Boy Missed The Boys Finale
The Boys creator Eric Kripke finally explains why Soldier Boy was MIA from the series finale — and teases a new spinoff that will tackle the questions he left hanging.
So, fans of The Boys were probably left scratching their heads when Soldier Boy didn’t pop up for the big series finale. I know I was. After stirring the pot for most of Season 5, he’s suddenly just... gone. Well, turns out there’s actually a game plan behind all this, straight from creator Eric Kripke’s lips.
Soldier Boy: On Ice (Literally)
If you were expecting Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy to burst onto the screen in the last episode, sorry to disappoint. His final Season 5 appearance was actually in Episode 7, where Homelander bundled him back into cryosleep. At first glance, it feels a bit abrupt, especially given how much he’d been mucking up everyone’s lives. But Kripke isn’t just making this up as he goes along—he’s been clear that Soldier Boy’s sudden vanishing act is 100% on purpose.
Kripke Clears Things Up – Sort Of
When chatting with ScreenRant, Kripke didn’t pretend that Soldier Boy’s exit wasn’t odd. He gets why viewers are baffled. Here’s the key bit he said:
'We’re deep into Vought Rising and we know what that story is. We know where that goes; a lot will make sense that might not make sense to the viewers at this exact moment, but hang in there, it all will.'
In plain English: the reasons for putting Soldier Boy on ice (again) will become much clearer in an upcoming spinoff called Vought Rising. Kripke also wanted to focus the finale on wrapping up the main characters’ journeys, instead of dragging every side character back on stage for one last round of chaos. Fair enough, really.
Wrapping Up Soldier Boy’s Season 5 Mayhem
This isn’t Kripke quietly dropping a thread, by the way. He points out that Soldier Boy’s story, for this season at least, ran its course. Most of his big moments happened earlier in the series:
- Homelander wakes Soldier Boy from storage in Episode 2, for reasons that seemed smart at the time (they never are, are they?)
- Soldier Boy’s return upends everything and leads to the big discovery: anyone who got V-One, the original Compound V formula, can't be killed by the Supe virus. That’s the season’s core threat sorted.
- Despite a bit of male bonding with Homelander, Soldier Boy still treats him more as a problem than family, which ends in Homelander slamming the freezer door on his 'dad'—again.
So his arc was basically finished for now, even if the final exit was a bit sudden. Kripke’s words: it's about giving proper send-offs to the main lot, not getting sidetracked by supporting characters’ subplots.
Spinoff Watch: Vought Rising
Now here’s where things get more interesting. Soldier Boy isn’t being dropped—far from it. Jensen Ackles will be back as the surly supe in Vought Rising. This spinoff heads into the 1950s, promising a murder mystery vibe. Aya Cash (Stormfront) is back too, joined by a wave of new characters. Vought Rising is set to hit Prime Video some time next year, so if you want the full story on Soldier Boy, you’ll need to keep one eye on that.
Bottom line: if you’re still annoyed about Soldier Boy’s quick exit, Kripke basically says 'hang tight—it’s all connected'. Personally, if this spinoff really does pull the story together, it’ll be a rare case of franchise expansion actually paying off. We’ll have to wait and see.
